One Hundred & Twenty Minutes @amak_mahmoodian@ft_weekend@bayasimons ‘Born one year after the Iranian revolution of 1979, Amak Mahmoodian was a child when many of her family members were imprisoned and she and her family were sent into exile in the mountains bordering the Caspian Sea. Years later, after coming to the UK to finish her PhD in photography, she too was exiled from her place of birth due to her family’s history.
“I haven’t been in my homeland for 14 years,” she says. Being separated from her family, she began to notice that “very often they come to visit me in my dreams”.’
Our friend Gboyega Odubanjo is missing, last seen at Shambala festival on Saturday morning wearing the red checked gillet in the second picture. If you were at the festival or have any information that could help find him please contact the Northamptonshire police on 101. Please also share this with anyone who was at the festival, all information and sightings are important.
Cinema, a photography special. Enormous pleasure to put together this issue of the FT Weekend Magazine, from a new commissioning job. Lots of good things inside - photography from Brigitte Lacombe, Nadia Lee Cohen and Kalpesh Lathigra and many more, plus the FT’s LA bureau chief reporting from an afternoon on the Hollywood picket line, and Nicole Flattery on why Shelley Duvall is the ultimate movie star. So much fun to work on this with @emma_bowkett . Out this weekend and online now 📸
The Sunset Sandwich Bar II opposite Smithfield meat market is now a tiny tiled art gallery. Loved visiting @ginnyonfrederick for the @fthtsi Spring arts issue and hearing about their program - including their just-finished group show which explored the maritime concept of ‘civil twilight’, the period after the sun sets when there’s still enough light to work by outside. Link in bio to read the profile 🥪 Thank you @louisquinze for the commission 😘 and @tom__jamieson for the lovely pics
Georgia for @fthtsi 🏔 Last November I went to Georgia for the inaugural @cultureweektbilisi , a festival of Georgian and Ukrainian arts. Read the story about the cultural resistance taking place in the country at the link in bio. Enormous thanks always to @jellison22 and @mariashollenbarger , and to @cultureweektbilisi and @sofiatchkonia for such a beautiful trip. Gorgeous pictures by @louis.b.r 💥
For @ft_weekend Magazine I wrote about the entertaining advice dispensed in vintage party guides - featuring Constance Spry’s cream cheese-stuffed grapes, Bridget Jones’ blue soup and why all the women should be seated Before the men enter the room. Link in bio.
A beautiful arts issue from @fthtsi this weekend 🌺 I had the pleasure of writing about the @paper.foundation ’s revival of handmade paper and what it means for artists working in the medium; about how contemporary poets are putting their work into the world - featuring @archhades ’s NFT, @heralindsaybird ’s retro-style website and Gboyega Odubanjo’s amazing performance and pamphlets - and finally about American photographer Saul Leiter’s newly discovered archive of mid century New York photographs. Not to be missed is @rosiemayseed ’s amazing cover on the stories of 19 Kyiv-based creatives who chose to remain in the city. On newsstands now 🗞 Mega thanks always to @jellison22@beatricehodgkin and @louisquinze 💫
