Fast friends since their first year at Bates enjoy a full circle moment on the steps of Coram.
It was a big event for Lauren Cockrill of Huntersville, N.C. (left), Kayleigh Flaherty of Waterville, Maine, and Mallory Johnson of Boulder, Colo., as they celebrated the binding of their senior theses in front of a group of supportive faculty, staff, and friends.
“I chose Bates for the sense of community,” Johnson said. “And everyone here, your presence is proof that I made the right choice. Today we celebrate not just our work, but also a sense of belonging to this beautiful village.”
And even though all three had different majors at Bates — biochemistry, biology and Asian studies, and sociology — their theses all explored issues related to human health and healthcare. Cockrill’s thesis looked closely at the menstrual cycle’s relation to diet, exercise, and recovery while Flaherty’s two theses dealt with medical treatment — specifically, gender authority in traditional Chinese medicine and the use of the ashoka herb in treating severe menstrual cramps. And Johnson’s thesis explored immigrant health inequity in Colorado.

Which is more challenging: getting on the feed or getting a Fulbright?
2026 Fulbright grantees Alexander Duchin ’26 of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., (left) and Aiman Hasan ’26 of Allen, Texas, asked for a picture together.
“We were both excited by our abroad experiences. … We’re interested in the medical field and doing research,” said Alex, who will head to Australia to research the physical effects of psychedelic-assisted therapy. Aiman’s off to Denmark to do cancer research.
The Fulbright program was a great opportunity for them. “We’ve been friends for four years, same major (biochemistry), same classes all throughout. … We just kind of stuck it out. Then we applied for Fulbrights (separate places) and decided, ‘Let’s get our faces on the Instagram!’ And it came to fruition a year later!” Aiman said.
They agreed that it might be as competitive to get on the Bates Instagram feed as to land a Fulbright.

Lights, camera, conversation! 🎬
As part of the @batesfilmfestival , students, faculty, and staff gathered for “Reel Talk,” a Short Term panel discussion on the hit television series “Heated Rivalry.”
Moderated by Benjamin E. Mays ’20 Distinguished Professor of Rhetoric, Film, and Screen Studies, Charles Nero, the 10-person panel — including Bates’ very own @presgarryjenkins ! — explored themes of fandom and fantasy, queerness, cultural stereotypes, and the broader cultural impact of the series.

From Bates to the world: Meet our *sixteen!* Bates Fulbright award winners for 2026–2027.
“I am enormously proud of this exceptional group of Fulbright recipients — and the dedicated faculty and staff who supported them throughout the application process and indeed their entire Bates careers,” said Bates President Garry W. Jenkins (@presgarryjenkins ). “The Fulbright program has recognized that these 16 students are profoundly dedicated to learning, meaningful cultural exchange, and scientific discovery.”
Heading to 11 countries across five continents, these Bobcats will spend the next year abroad teaching, conducting research, and carrying out cultural exchange projects around the world as part of the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program. Earlier this year, Bates was recognized as a Top Producer of Fulbright Student awards for the 15th year in a row.

Club events like Bates' Cultural Showcase aren't just for fun — although they are a LOT of fun. They're one more place where our vibrant and diverse community comes to life.
Co-hosted by @bates.csa and @batesraicesunidas , the annual performing arts showcase is a chance for Bates students to take to the stage to perform music, dance, and poetry and celebrate their cultural identity and traditions.
When Josiah Johnson ’29 — seen performing in this year's edition in slide 2 — visited Bates as a high school student, he wasn’t sure what it would be like to leave New York City and attend a school that might be so different from his home. While he might have been considering several colleges when the showcase began during his admitted students day, being pulled on stage to participate was a decisive event.
“Hearing that roar of the crowd wasn't just a warm welcome, it was an instinctive confirmation that I wouldn’t have to marginalize my own identity to fit in. In that moment of collective energy, the abstract idea of ‘community’ became a tangible reality, and I knew I had found my place.”

A groundbreaking moment for the future of fitness and well-being at Bates.
The Library Quad was full of energy yesterday as @presgarryjenkins and members of the Bates community ceremonially broke ground on the Stoddard Fitness and Well-Being Center. This project represents a major investment in the student experience and the future of campus — a proud moment reflecting our shared commitment to holistic health and community connection.
We were also honored to celebrate Jon W. Brayshaw ’90, P’25 and Jocelyn Stoddard Brayshaw ’88, P’25, whose $10 million gift was instrumental in bringing this project to life.
