The Irish Government has announced the details of the successor scheme to their Basic Income for Artists pilot. 2000 more artists will begin receiving a basic income of €325 a week before the end of the year.
This is a massive, positive move to take inspiration from, but there are some areas that could be improved 👆
Yesterday a #BasicIncome for Artists was covered on BBC One!
A participant from the Irish pilot, Elinor, described the transformative impact on her as an artist and Cleo shared the business case, and the clear link between some of the best British art and a social security system that supports artists.

A permanent Basic Income for Artists in Ireland! 🇮🇪
Massive news from Ireland today as their pioneering scheme is made permanent, with new applications opening in September 2026. Announced in the Irish Government's 2026 Budget, the scheme will mirror the terms of the original pilot, paying €325 a week, but has provision to grow to 2,200 new recipients if funds allow 📈
This comes off the back of impressive results from the pilot. Basic Income is being proved a success time and time again — governments need to start to act!

A big welcome to Jo Poulton who has joined the @autonomy.uk team! Jo is the Founder and Co-ordinator of @BI4Farmers ✨
We met Jo when she joined us in testing out the Basic Income Conversation Toolkit back in 2021. After making the transition into growing Jo returned to the idea of #basicincome and founded the @BI4Farmers campaign to provide our #farmers with the financial security they deserve. 🪙
We've supported from the side lines and celebrated as the campaign has gone from strength to strength. Earlier this year we co-published the report "Sowing the seeds of stability: the case for a basic income for farmers, farmworkers and food producers in the UK". 🌱
Now we're delighted to announce that Jo has joined the Autonomy team in a 1 day a week role to keep driving the campaign, alongside her Co-head Grower role at @simshillsharedharvest 👩🌾
🚨 Breaking: New YouGov poll shows popularity of #UBI 🚨
46% of Britons support the idea of implementing a #basicincome. ✅
The poll also found that:
☺ 50% of people think a basic income would improve quality of life
📉 52% think it would reduce poverty.
Not only is the policy popular but half of those who support a basic income think it should cover all of a person’s basic living costs, regardless of other forms of income.
Basic income is most popular with Labour voters, 61% said they support the measure.
A UBI might not be included in this week's budget, but it's clear it is a common sense solution to many of the biggest challenges the country is facing. It's time for the new government to begin its roll out 💪
Last week 31 documents by the Department of Work and Pensions were finally published, some of them date back to 2018. All of them show that our social security system is failing. We deserve better, we deserve a #BasicIncome.
The reports shows:
📉 Universal Credit claimants with debts were less likely to be able to find work or a better paid job
🍴 Two-thirds of benefits claimants with debts have been unable to buy food
🫙 81% of Universal Credit claimants in debt ran out of money before their next payment “always” or “most of the time”
Punishing conditions don't help people find work. They push people into debt. They leave people without food. It's time for a #UBI
Today is #worldmentalhealthday so we are revisiting our work on how a #basicincome could improve our mental health.
Our journey with our #mentalhealth is lifelong. But it will always be made harder by financial insecurity. A guaranteed, universal basic income for all would mean the basics were always taken care of, even when everything else is harder.
