From a leading scholar of the ancient world, this stunning illustrated guide to the Roman Empire explores every aspect of its rise to power, its dominion over the world, and its eventual fall. At its peak, the Roman Empire stretched from the borders of Scotland to the shores of the Persian Gulf and boasted a population of 100 million. Founded by Augustus in 31 BCE, and enduring for over four centuries, the empire was helmed by some of the most famous—and notorious—figures in history: Caligula, Nero, Commodus, and a rogue’s gallery of ruthless generals who brought the so-called Pax Romana to much of the known world. In the Atlas of the Roman Empire, David Potter provides a comprehensive look at the empire from rise to fall. Featuring stunning photographs of weapons, fortifications, portraits, and monuments, the book illuminates the ancient arms race between Rome and its imperial rivals. Comprehensive political maps show the dynamic ebb and flow of conquest and resistance, with battle maps elucidating the tactics that made Rome so successful. Social history is also woven throughout with intimate portraits of people across the empire, from the emperor himself to subjects in far-flung provinces. Packed with detail and lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned maps and images, this is the ultimate guide to the world’s most formidable empire. Europe: A New History by Roderick Beaton offers a captivating and original perspective on the continent’s past, brilliantly tracing its journey from ancient Greece to the present, including the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine. This compelling book explores Europe not merely as a geographic region but as a dynamic idea and a shared identity that has developed over thousands of years. Praised for its bold scope and insightful analysis, it has received high acclaim. Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads, calls it “a true tour de force,” a praise displayed prominently on the cover. Critics admire Beaton’s skill in distilling vast historical complexities into a clear and engaging narrative, illuminating a continent whose history has often been characterized by division and conflict.

Delighted to share the news that very talented @circleofwine member Kathy Burk’s new book ‘Wine: A Global History’ is being published by @profile.books in the UK on 1st October, and by @basicbooks in the US on 13th October. The book begins in the Neolithic period and ends in 2025, covering the major wine areas in every continent barring Antarctica, and including chapters on the complex relationship between Islam and wine. Kathy has been primarily an academic historian of international history, but in 2002 received the DipWSET. Since then she has lectured & judged, and written a number of articles on the history and culture of wine for @worldoffinewine . She served on the @circleofwine committee as membership secretary.

hi everyone! I’m zoe! welcome to my tour stop on the #ANHPIBookstaTour Day 2. I like to read a lot of history and nonfiction, which has always helped me better understand my identity & the events/cultural forces that shaped it. Simultaneously, though, it’s made me more aware of the invisible hierarchies that shape how we see ourselves and others. These are my thoughts on those hierarchies, and how I’m trying to challenge them. These are not definite statements, obviously, just my own experiences & observations. Still, recognising these patterns has pushed me to question my assumptions and, hopefully, become more compassionate and open-minded in the process. I’d love to hear your thoughts, whether you’ve navigated similar questions or seen this from a different perspective! Excited to be sharing this day with @zeelacson - make sure you check out her post as well! (and a big ty to @bookish.millennial and @hyperfixatedreader for organising this!)

Some of the most intractable controversies in our divided society are, at bottom, about what actions and transactions should be banned. Disagreements are fierce because arguments on both sides are often made in uncompromising moral or religious terms. But in MORAL ECONOMICS, Nobel Prize-winning economist Alvin E. Roth asserts that we can make progress on these and other difficult topics if we view them as markets—tools to help decide who gets what. Find out the answers to these pressing controversies and so many more on in MORAL ECONOMICS, hitting shelves May 12. Preorder your copy today and receive 20% off with code MORAL20.
