this photo represents such a cool moment in time. I was at the So Called Jam in Baltimore with @elaskowich and @bdc4130 (hiding in the shady background here). I was teaching this young kid how to bunnyhop higher when the photographer asked if we could do one side by side for him. I was 50 at the time (May 2023). I look back on this photo now and see a torch being handed down, from me to this teen. I wish I could remember his name, but I wish even more that I can keep these feelings going.. the rush of a 30" hop (at my age, no less!), the pride of sharing a skill with a new generation, the smiles and laughter with friends who all share a similar stoke.

Today I felt genuinely good on the bike for the first time in at least two months. I haven't talked about it much, but for the last several years my riding has been gradually regressing. Of course it's easy to apply any number of explanations to do with age and other body changes I've been going through, but I also suspected something else - something I couldn't quite define - until about the last 18 months or so.
It's still so hard to explain, but try maybe to imagine for a moment that you're experiencing life as a film. Most of the time, when things are happening at a manageable pace, your picture is smooth and steady. But then as things start happening more quickly, you realize that suddenly a frame gets stuck. The picture you have remains static while you keep moving forward. You're no longer getting all the information you need about where you are in relation to things around you or how fast you're moving. This is what's been happening and it's caused me some absolutely terrible scares on the bike lately and a few nasty tumbles.
Recently I did finally get a consultation with a neurologist and we're moving forward with some testing, but it's likely to be many months before I have any answers as this whole process moves at the speed of healthcare. Still, I'm thankful for having access to the excellent care I do. And I'm hopeful that I may get some answers for this and maybe for some other issues I've been living with, as well.
In the meantime I've been making small changes in my routines and habits, as well as learning to recognize the warning signs of an impending attack. My riding sessions will definitely be staying more tame and shorter in duration for now.. maybe indefinitely.. there's just no way I can know right now and that's the hardest thing to grapple with in all of this. One way or another though, I -will- keep riding however I can and I -will- stay engaged with my BMX community. It's the most important thing in my life after family, and I have no idea how I could go on without it.
