Trent Reznor assimilates. Part man, part machine — exactly like in the fascinating song The Becoming from his 1994 masterpiece The Downward Spiral — Reznor sometimes seems to operate… like a hive mind. Like the Borg, the Star Trek villains who absorb civilizations to perfect themselves, Reznor’s cosmic hunger shows no restraint. And man — if you know what I mean — the hints have been there THE WHOLE TIME. In the end, what did the imprint on the very first album say? “Nine Inch Nails is Trent Reznor.” Sure, there was a rule change when Atticus Ross became the first permanent member besides him — but that was just misdirection. Reznor absorbed Ministry, The Cure, and Depeche Mode and spat out perfected industrial metal; he devoured hours of Doom (to the point of delaying albums), only to spawn an OST for id Software himself and land the NIN logo on Quake’s nailgun ammo — all while co-touring with Bowie. A fan, Rob Sheridan, made a fansite and became NIN’s art director for 15 years; then David Fincher directed “Only,” and suddenly Reznor was winning an Oscar for that same director’s film. Then another. Could I go on listing how NIN masters both consistency and reinvention, somehow at once? Yup. But IG’s character limit won’t let me. So let’s drift back to the present, where this ever-growing, Thing-like NIN creature has now melded with electro-house godfather Boys Noize, Reznor’s wife Mariqueen Maandig (back on stage — what a presence), plus a ballet group (for real??), unveiling an uber-electrified version of the catalog — casting spells from a pyramid of light and darkness while doing an insane refresh in sound, energy, and showmanship, outperforming every other Coachella act. He didn’t even try to hide the absorption — just fused the names like Goten and Trunks with Gotenks. Nine Inch Noize. It started with their collab on Challengers — best horny tennis movie out there — and, for now, ends with this amazing live. Because artists copy, great artists steal — but Reznor? A new \\WAVES playlist for you – this one comes from a very personal place, some sort of adolescence memory mixed with cinematographic references. The whole concept was born out of creating some sort of time capsule to the 60s/70s, with the POV of me/you entering a room into sort sort of dandy-ish house party in hollywood where everybody is smoking, chatting about the meaning of life and/or absolute bullshit, with this music being played by some stereo in the background. It’s an ode to a boundless creative period in history, where suddenly what was progressive was also.. mainstream (as it should be, if you ask me), and from which a moltitude of new artstic genres were spawned. I was really curious to see how the \\WAVES artworks would look in real life and on a massive scale, so.. I reached out @art.innovation.gallery to make this happen! A few selected animated artworks, featuring stunning visuals created in collaboration with @sailordanny , @alessstrick , and Riccardo “Gradoner” Carusi (some of the most incredible artists I know and co-authors of my most beloved @bashbash.waves playlist artworks), were showcased across the sprawling skyline of New York – hopefully some of you managed to see that live? (I didn’t, as I was here in Rome, aha)

📀 NEW FORMAT: BEHOLD THE SIGNATURE PLAYLIST! 🌔 MELANGE: May your beat pulsate through the sands: a Dune-inspired sonic odyssey. Features music from Hans Zimmer, Ashnikko, The Comet Is Coming, and many more. A signature playlist, unlike other playlists, can feature tracks that are already present in other \\WAVES mixes and is dedicated to a specific media universe. In this case, we wanted to translate into music (and its accompanying animated artwork) the vision that director Denis Villeneuve embraced when bringing Frank Herbert’s masterpiece, Dune, to life (and to cinemas). The design pays tribute to the splendid work of the artist known as “R▲” (check out his profile on Dribbble at //theraa ), seeking to incorporate his stunning abstract interfaces into the style of the more sci-fi-inspired \\WAVES experiments, such as the A Cosmic Journey playlist cover — a mix that pairs remarkably well with the Dune aesthetic. On a related note, this same artist played a key role in developing the Cyberpunk 2077 UI design, which, in my opinion, stands as one of the most impressive pieces of futuristic interactive imagery ever created! 🔈 sound on and follow it on Spotify!
