My Mom signed me up for fiddle lessons when I was about 8 years old, one of many things she signed me up for that I’m grateful for, including drum lessons when I was 10. I’m forever indebted to my angel mother for all she taught me and for her constant support and love. And Erin is in every way doing the same for our kids and is the most unbelievable Mom. To all the incredible mothers out there, and to the wonderful aunts who have nurtured our kids, you are the most powerful force in the world. ❤️

Afro-Beat + Reco-Reco from Brazil

Here is the backstory to this track:
I went to Salvador, Brazil last year to work with an incredible singer named Nicole Luz. At night I kept hearing all this loud music down in the street. From my hotel balcony it sounded like somebody was cranking up their speakers and blasting it out of a club or something. I went down to investigate and discovered this intense impromptu jam session of guys sitting around a picnic table set up in the middle of the street next to some local bars. This was my first time seeing someone play the Reco-reco in person. It’s this metal rectangular pipe lookin thing with three metal springs stretched across the top. These were traditionally made of wood and played with a wooden stick (like a guiro) but this metal version is a variation designed to be much louder. It was perfect for a street performance like the one I saw. I’m still getting the hang of it, the guy I saw playing it was way better than I am, but I like how it fit in with this Afro-beat groove.
I’m playing my 1970s Ludwig set on this track. When I overdubbed the Reco-reco I had switched the drums out to my newest find, a set I really love to record on, it’s a 60s Leedy drum set that I call my lucky charms kit because it came with a green 4 leaf clover on the front head when I bought it.

A little shaker groove. A bit of history: this shaker has been in basically every US state, I played it a lot over the years in touring bands. It was always a great instrument for shows but sometimes it held me up in airports because it’s a lot of metal going through an airport scanner. I once had a bunch of airport security guys with machine guns standing around acting really suspicious of me as they inspected it- to give them some assurance I explained what it is and gave it a few shakes. They laughed and tried it themselves.

I call this one Labyrinth
This is when the protagonist turns a corner and realizes they have more strength than they thought.
They find their way through all the obstacles that have been holding them back.
I replaced my rack tom with a tambora from the Dominican Republic that I used to jam on with my friend @joshakerofficial (incredible composer) in the stairwell in college. I put up some of those raw LP pans for some extra color.
