We had a fabulous evening at the Northern Design Awards last night in Manchester. We were thrilled to win the award for Residential Landscape Design for our garden One Oak in Cheshire.
Thank you to Shelley and her team @northerndesignawards for a magnificent event and to the judges for their time. We also need to thank our client for saying “yes” on many occasions and all the suppliers who make our job easier by producing quality products.
We never take awards for granted and having tough competition from designers such as @roberthughes.studio , makes us push our limits, raise our aspirations and take our ambitions further. Design is strong in the north and collectively, there are some amazing projects happening across the region.
Being finalists at this competition is a prize in itself and there was a lot of talent to celebrate in the cathedral last night.

Swales are shallow, vegetated channels designed to manage rainwater where it falls.
Instead of water rushing straight into drains, swales slow the flow, allowing it to soak into the ground. This helps reduce surface flooding, recharge groundwater, and trap sediments and pollutants before they reach rivers.
They’re a key part of SUDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems), especially in urban areas where hard surfaces increase runoff.
Simple design, but they play a big role in managing water more sustainably.

At its heart lies a stunning outdoor swimming pool, acting as both a focal point and a place to unwind. It’s framed by stone paving and layered planting to give a sense of depth and calm. At the far end, a sunken fire pit provides a more enclosed area for sitting and socialising, adding a different scale and atmosphere to the garden

Barnes Walker have led the landscape vision from initial concept through to successful planning approval, and are now bringing the scheme to life on site alongside main contractor Pinkstone Homes. Set within a topographically challenging setting, the design responds with a confident, contemporary approach that seamlessly integrates architecture and landscape.
The scheme unfolds through a series of carefully curated outdoor experiences, including a striking swimming pool with expansive entertainment terraces, a productive kitchen garden, and a bold fire pit area designed for social gatherings. A tranquil zen garden provides moments of calm, while sculptural floating steps elegantly navigate the changing levels of the site. Layers of specimen planting and wildflower fringes are woven throughout, introducing seasonal colour, softness, and ecological richness.
