Truly humbled to share that my comedy TV pilot “HomeMakers” was named a Semifinalist for the prestigious @humanitasprize New Voices Fellowship, which seeks to highlight stories “exploring the human condition in a nuanced, meaningful way.” Out of almost 1,000 scripts submitted, I am one of 25 semifinalists.
Seeds of an idea for my show were first planted in response to the shameful #familyseparationpolicy first enacted a few years ago. I wanted to propose an alternate view to what’s possible in a world of disagreement. Because there will always BE disagreement. But we can’t lose a sense of people’s dignity, goodness and worth. As we figure things out, we MUST start from there.
So I created a ragtag group of outsiders that have to get over their hang-ups to help a newly widowed gay dad raise an exceptional boy, finding friendship and family in the American melting pot. Because we can all be ridiculous, but in the end, don’t we just want to love and be loved?
Also, doughnuts. We all want doughnuts.
Every once in a while, a project comes into your life that aligns with your inner fire, your soul. Being witness to the senseless cruelty of #familyseparation policy changed me forever, further shaping my sense of purpose as a citizen and an artist.
What an honor it is to help tell the story of D Esperanza and his mentor, @imgerardo_ivan - they offer us an important historical record that cannot be ignored. Learning more details about this horrendous time through the eyes of a child reminds me of other such published accounts.
What is beautifully and authentically captured in simple language, is the relentless optimism and tenacity of an #immigrant… his wanting to do what’s right, follow the rules and do what he’s told. That’s what most of us do. We don’t hear about that in today’s rhetoric and yet, it’s part of what I identified with the most. This kid could have been me, except I was graced with different circumstances in life. I was lucky.

Swimming in the world of Irene Fornes and celebrating her legacy has been life-affirming. To do it in partnership with the @fornesinstitute , thereby joining the greater effort to illuminate this masterful writer is a privilege. She influenced and taught many of my past collaborators - I just feel like the natural extension. The next wave.
Sharing the wonderful documentary “The Rest I Make Up” @restimakeupfilm by her brilliant pupil @memranny was mesmerizing. The young actors felt they understood something about Irene and that she understood something about them. It was as if she had reached out a hand from another time and space and guided them toward dreaming, art-making and self-discovery.
Thank you to Renier Rodriguez Mendez for lending us his sublime painting for the poster. His work is phenomenal, gorgeous and has stayed with me.

I’m awfully late in posting, but I’m thrilled to share that earlier this year, our remount of @martyna_majok ’s “Ironbound” garnered an incredible 9 national awards from The Kennedy Center. We were floored.
Perhaps most significant was The Citizen Artist Award which recognizes productions that promote long-term societal impact, encouraging empathy and advocating for justice. Given the nature of this immigrant story, that recognition landed deeply.

Our Region 8 of @kcactf is comprised of colleges and universities in Utah, Southern Nevada, Arizona, Central and Southern California, Hawaii and Guam. As we rehearse the remount, I’m grateful for this creative team’s contributions and dedication to this stunner of a play. Again we get to illuminate and humanize the immigrant experience at a time of much needed empathy and togetherness

A few weeks ago, I was at my doctor’s office and I was chatting with the healthcare worker that does intake at the clinic. Between asking my height and weight, she told me about her second job working at Target. She needed the extra money to help with her daughter’s sports activities. She wasn’t complaining or venting. It was just a fact. Today, I picketed alongside healthcare workers and thought of her. The Fight of Labor is transforming our economy because it needs to change across so many sectors.
