GAY24 FILM CLUB • MAY 27, 2025 • @barflippys IN NAARM •
This month at GAY24 we're exploring the edges of contemporary queer furry culture through Brett Hanover's coming-of-age docufiction RUKUS, and Kendall Hennessy's animated short THE YAWN. These two films offer a window into the queer fringe communities that often fall to the side within dominant narratives of community and queer identity formation. In and of themselves, the films offer two beautiful examples of the exciting and boundary-pushing art being made within modern queer furry culture.
Shot in the American South and moving through loosely organised communities of punk houses, online message boards, furry conventions, and community theatre, RUKUS revolves around the fragments and reverberations left behind by the titular subject after their untimely death. Framed through Hannover's personal relationship with Rukus, we see how the connections formed within these communities expand and inform his life, and how these spaces can offer opportunities for healing, experimentation and growth.
The film's use of staged reenactments and seamless blending of fiction gorgeously replicates the ways in which a sudden loss can stretch the fabric of reality around a person; memories become expanded and embellished, and imagined conversations bleed into the actual until the lines between them disappear. RUKUS explores how the memories and art we leave behind can make us more "real" than we ever felt in life, and the ramifications that has for our loved ones and wider community.
Alongside RUKUS we'll be screening Kendall Hennessy's THE YAWN, a short film about a man who experiences religious psychosis after becoming obsessed with an unexplained deep sea sound. Kendall (also known as kendall :3 and baroo) is a Seattle based musician, artist and filmmaker whose work feels similarly interested in people living on the edges of community, and the power of incidental connections formed within these informal, precarious, and fringe spaces. We look forward to placing these works in conversation with each other.

OPENING NIGHT: 25 APRIL, 8PM
EXHIBITION RUNS: 25 APRIL – 9 MAY 2026
The images in this exhibition document bodies, intimacy, nightlife, desire, and collective presence. They were not created as political symbols. But in a digital environment where queer visibility, s*xual expression, and s*x work are routinely flagged, suppressed, or erased by automated systems, simply being seen becomes political.

GAY24 FILM CLUB • PROGRAM THIRTY-SEVEN • APRIL 29, 2026 • @barflippys IN NAARM •
This month at GAY24, we explore the topic of reproduction and ask how changes in the technological ways we make families have transformed queer lives, communities, and our relationships to our own bodies and medicine. We will be screening two Australian films that capture distinct historical moments in queer reproductive cultures, and invite us to reflect on how much the queer politics of family and parenting has changed from the 1980s to today.
To assist us in exploring this topic, we’re incredibly grateful to welcome Dr Jaya Keaney to provide guest programming notes and an extended introduction on the night. Jaya is based at Melbourne Uni, where she writes, researches, and teaches in the fields of feminist technoscience studies, queer and feminist theory, and critical theories of race. This particular program was born of long discussions of the histories of lesbian feminist attitudes towards IVF, how they were shifted and informed in part by the AIDS crisis and broader movements toward queer assimilationism, and how those same attitudes form some of the basis for the modern TERF movement. We look forward to exploring these stories through comparing and contrasting our films for this month - Susan Lambert’s ON GUARD and Kelli Simpson’s TWO GIRLS AND A BABY.
