On my last day in Madagascar, I almost drowned, caught in a rip current. Two weeks of incredible memories were overwhelmed by the few minutes of struggle. For a while that was the main thing I remembered about Madagascar, which feels unfair to an experience that was full of warmth and joy.
The water was clear, the air was fresh, the people reminded me of home, the coastline was endless, I ate fries everyday, and most importantly got to work with brilliant people doing life changing work (shoutout to @reezohassan for telling me to swim to the side, saved my life).
Memory is frustrating, it grabs onto the one moment that scared you and pushes everything else to the side. the calm small joys dont get tagged with the same urgency, so they fade faster.
Grateful for these photos and clips for holding so much.
I met Bemnet and his friends at the end of a hike in a dense forest that leads to a beautiful natural spring. They asked if I can take their group photo and told me they came here to swim every weekend. I wish I took more roles of film with me, but glad I have this to remember the beauty of southern ethiopia.
Arba Minch, 2025.
Osu Beach and Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra. This was when I first learned about Kwame’s legacy in Ghana. How incredible to have a mayor named after him and living his values🚀
Carolin in the studio. Special portraits for a special new decade.
I’ve been trying black and white film and haven’t loved it, but very happy with these :) Happy birthday friend.
Back in Cairo and thinking again about this series I wanted to create three years ago—about the Nile and its people. Not long after, both Sudan and parts of Ethiopia, where the Nile begins, became inaccessible with conflict. Sharing a few photos for now. Maybe one day, when peace is all the shore of the Nile knows, it’ll become a book project.
Between Nostalgia and Dreams closes this weekend! Time flew by and the opening in February just seemed like yesterday. Grateful to @theafricacenter for this partnership, especially grateful for the brilliance and care of @maison.avontgarde@evelynaowen and our partners at @photoville for bringing this exhibition to life.
@itsteranga_ at Harlem is also closing this weekend at the Africa Center. Come out tomorrow, June 14, for a final celebration. 🤍
