Our centre is overflowing with flip-flops, sandals, crocs, and plastic shoes. These are overwhelmingly the majority of marine litter found in kiunga marine reserve, and there is no real recycling for them….. where do your discarded flipflops go? #cleanseas #endplasticpollution #savebiodiversity #flipflops #kiungamarinereserve
The before, during and after of one of Bahari Mojas major clean ups on the remote beach of Mongo Sherifu, an important turtle nesting beach. Thousands of sandals & flipflops, and 500 kg of plastic destined for the sorting centre. We appreciate all the support 🙏🏽 @lamuenvironment #keepitcoming @kiungacommunitywildlifeassocia@kiwayusafaris #kws #cleanseas #protectwildlife #endplasticpollution #savebiodiversity
MAZINGIRA DAY! 1 day, 1 community, 1 ton of marine litter.
Thank you to mkokoni community @kicowa@kws@lef@ktcg@bmu a commendable effort and keeping up the hope and good work
Huge effort by volunteers from Lamu & Mkokoni for international youth day. 800 kg of marine litter was collected from one of our most exposed & vulnerable beaches and transported back to our Bahari Moja centre for processing. Thank you to @nrt_kenya@kws for their continued support for Bahari Moja and efforts to clean our marine environment. #nrt #kws #kiungamarinereserve #cleanseas #endplasticpollution #kiwayusafaris #baobabsofkitangani #internationalyouthday
On World Earth Day, Bahari Moja made its annual mission to Mongo Sherif turtle nesting beach on the remotest of islands within the Kiunga Marine Reserve. The most staggering amount of marine litter choking & inundating this critical nesting beach. Together with scouts and volunteers from the turtle group, the team managed to collect and remove 3 tonnes. They could not physically manage any more on a single day. Several Green Turtle had been up to lay, and they managed to relocate a vulnerable nest from below the high water mark, one wonders whether she would have laid in such an unsuitable spot had there not been so much plastic at the top of the beach?… A phenomenal effort by all those involved. @kiungacommunitywildlifeassocia@lamuenvironment@nrt_kenya@kenyawildlifeservice@kiwayusafaris #worldearthday #cleanseas #endplasticpollution #marinelitter #marinelittercrisis #savebiodiversity
Introducing Bahari Moja’s collaborative marine litter monitoring project to the community. A big thank you to KWS senior warden Willys Osore for his address & support in this project 🙏🏽 and we welcome the new warden of Kiunga Marine National Reserve.
This project aims to measure the extent and impact of marine litter on turtle nesting beaches.
This pilot project highlights the need to collaborate effectively with partners in conservation.

Measuring our quadrants following training with LOC. The first chapter of monitoring marine litter!
Thanks to @lamuenvironment for facilitating this process and to @localoceanco for sharing their expertise. In collaboration with @kws@nrt_kenya@kiwayusafaris #endplasticpollution #cleanseas #biodiversity
Another clean up on this popular turtle nesting beach this season, 30 youth managed to carry 300 kg of litter to the Bahari Moja centre, averaging 100 kgs a month deposited on this small remote cove #cleanseas #saveourseas #endplasticpollution #savebiodiversity @lamuenvironment@kiwayusafaris@kenyawildlifeservice
With marine plastic increasing exponentially annually, and no limits or stemming of plastic production set at the global plastic treaty last year, little or no attempt by Kenya or countries on the rim of the Indian Ocean to address waste management: it is of major importance those in a position to help come together to, at the very least, record what is happening in remote parts of our coast. To try and capture the impact marine litter is really having on us, wildlife and the environment. We are grateful and inspired by this collaboration by our partners & community stakeholders to endeavor to capture some facts on litter and its impact. @lamuenvironment@localoceanco@kenyawildlifeservice@nrt_kenya@kiungacommunitywildlifeassocia@kiungamarinenational@kiwayusafaris
