Celebrating five years of our residency program! Today, we spotlight animated filmmaker Phuong Mai Nguyen (@bacasable ), 2023 Villa Albertine resident, whose animated feature In Waves (2026) will open the 65th edition of Cannes Critics’ Week (@semainedelacritique , @festivaldecannes ).
Drawing from an autobiographical graphic novel, In Waves follows the lives of AJ Dungo and Kristen, starting in their teenage years. Their overwhelming love story unfolds under the pink-and-blue Californian sky and explores the pre-colonial rituals of Hawaiian surfing while referencing cycles of life, waves, and nature.
During her residency, Nguyen traveled across the West Coast, from Los Angeles to San Francisco and on to Hawaii, meeting surfers, historians, musicians, and others connected to the story to build a rich visual and cultural foundation for the film. The movie is one of 11 titles selected for this year’s prestigious Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival.
