This February we will be joined by Jason Marsalis on three special Sundays for his Congo Square Roots of Jazz Residency. Along with special guests Jason will be exploring the history of Jazz in Congo Square. You don’t want to miss it! This residency is made possible with the support of Jazz Road, a national initiative of South Arts, which is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. #jazzroad

My good friend Terry Simon recently added this amazing sculpture to his front yard. Created by @johnbarnesart , it marks history in time & places in terms of people of African descent in the Americas. As the great Maya Angelou said “You can’t really know where you’re going until you know where you have been.” I encourage everyone to take time over this holiday season to learn more about your heritage and explore your history. #WednesdayWisdom

It always seems impossible until it actually happens. Whether it’s Will Smith conquering the entertainment world or BMike creating the artwork for Will’s new novel, never be afraid to pursue your gifts because you never know where they may lead you. #WednesdayWisdom

A few years ago I was commissioned along with @carl.joe.williams to create this drum installation @musicbox.village . This is a a reminder that you don’t need much to be creative, use what’s in your reach & always challenge yourself to think outside of the box. #WednesdayWisdom

Travelers from around the world visit the French Quarter to admire the amazing architecture & craftsmanship. Many of these structures were built by enslaved tradesmen & free men of color during the 1700’s. If you look closely you can see African images & symbols throughout their work such as this Sankofa adinkra symbol of West Africa which represents the importance of learning from our past. #WednesdayWisdom

Thankful to be safe and sound during these times, even more thankful for the love & support from those close and far. I pray that everyone is able to recover and find some sense of normalcy soon

Arts are one of the most powerful platforms we have to speak our truths. It’s important that we remember the importance of what we create and why we create. Excerpt of a letter written by James Baldwin #WednesdayWisdom

Jerome Smith is a true living legend. He was the force behind many civil rights movements in New Orleans. I encourage everyone to stop by the Treme Center to check out this mural #WednesdayWisdom

Creativity is both a gift and a challenge. It can be difficult to manage our thoughts with so much happening around us. Sometimes we need to slow down and make sure that we are taking care of ourselves #WednesdayWisdom
