"I think of these forms as imagined space through which I build landscape and terrain. I approach my work in the same way I wish others to experience it: invited by a pot’s utility and allured by it’s subtle layers of reference." —Aysha Peltz

Aysha Peltz stretches and darts porcelain into volumetric forms, which she then enhances with glazes that pool and break off high points. On this week’s Tales of a Red Clay Rambler interview we talk about pushing porcelain to its limits, learning to self-edit, and the symbiotic relationship between her studio practice and teaching at Bennington College, VT. We also discuss her role in co-curating The Old Church Pottery Show (@oldchurchpotteryshow ), happening December 5th-7th, in Demarest, NJ. #talesofaredclayrambler #brickyardnetwork
"My thrown pots are built on basic geometries: cylinders or cones varying in proportions with suggestions of volume. Working from this foundation, I add layers of texture and dimensional lines which will respond to and emphasize the unique qualities that emerge as I finish each piece." – Aysha Peltz

"My wheel-thrown porcelain pots rely heavily on the material phenomenon of clay; volumes forced by swelling, fissures caused by pressure, and tearing due to weight. I alter freshly thrown forms to resemble an action that has just occurred or a moment frozen in time.
I think of these forms as imagined space through which I build landscape and terrain. I approach my work in the same way I wish others to experience it: invited by a pot’s utility and allured by it’s subtle layers of reference." – Aysha Peltz

Judy Schwartz @judy.claylady.schwartz caught up with Artist Paul Briggs @psbriggs3.0 at the 50th Anniversary of the Old Church Pottery Show @oldchurchpotteryshow curated by Chris Gustin @gustinceramics , Bruce Dehnert @brucedehnert and Aysha Peltz @ayshapeltz .
More about Briggs:
🔹 From the Hudson Valley to Alfred University Born in Beacon, NY, Paul Briggs’ artistic path has led him to become an artist-teacher at The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.
🔹 Slab-Building & Pinch-Forming
* Slab-building is Paul’s method to think, reflect, and “philosophize concretely.”
* Pinch-forming is his way to quiet the mind, creating organic, nature-inspired vessels.
🔹 Nature as Muse Paul’s pinch-formed pieces evoke leaves, tentacles, and conifer cones. He attends to transitions in texture and form, striving for flow and growth inspired by nature.
🔹 Philosophy in Clay Paul’s work meditates on balance, resilience, and “continuation against overwhelming odds.” Clay becomes a vessel for exploring equanimity and the intangible, as his sculptures challenge boundaries—literally and metaphorically.
