I didn’t choose a life dedicated to basketball. I was exposed to several sports before I decided that one was above all.
You knew from the start what you wanted to do and how you would accomplish it.
It seems like yesterday when we first met at
@riawash ’s volleyball match in McGonigle Hall. You were none too pleased that I was running my mouth in reference to beating you in a game of 1-on-1. Thankfully we moved beyond that day, and I cannot express how grateful I am to have had a front row seat to your Hall of Fame career.
Remember when I applied to Nike and had to put down 3-references...I contacted
@officialspikelee ,
@on_yo_mark , and you. I put your name and number on the form and after I got the job, the hiring manager told me he never thought to try calling you.
Eddie Jones, Aaron McKie, and
@jeromeallen53 were the first people that I actually knew who would go to the league. They were legends in the city and when you made your announcement, I was happy, and confused. I didn’t realize you were THAT good.
Years later I would a prodigy like you when a 7-year old
@jalenbrunson1 challenged me to a game of 1-on-1 at Coach Chaney’s basketball camp. The game went to 3, with everything being 1-point.
He shot for first from the top of the key and missed...okay cool, my ball. I made the first shot from the left elbow, you know, my shot, and then I sank the second jumper from the right side extended below the arc. I missed the third and quickly realized this was no ordinary child. For starters, he’s a lefty, and he talked trash, just like his pop...and when he stutter-stepped to create space, it felt like I was in the Twilight Zone.
Afterward, I told Ric how good his son was, and of course, he didn’t want to hear it. My next thought was, I better keep an eye on him because the last time a kid was this good at a young age, he skipped college and played for 20-years for the
@lakers .
I miss you man. It’s tough knowing I won’t be seeing you anymore. I try not to think about it. I recently wrote a story about you and I did my best. I went out like you in your final game. This was my opus, a masterpiece that I pray will stand the test of time.
