Awa Gaye is a photographer based in Ghent. In June 2025 she got her Masters degree in photography from KASK School of Arts. In her photography Awa tries to capture a deceiving stillness enveloped by nostalgia. Guided by intuition, culture and identity, she is mostly drawn to social documentary work which raises questions about certain topics while also attempting to craft a better understanding of herself and the contemporary world. @aw.0aa

“Currents 11: The Turn of Many Suns” đŸ’„ Participating artist Awa Gaye grew up in Belgium and is currently based in Ghent. She studied photography at KASK, Ghent. Her work draws inspiration from family relationships, cultural identity, origin, and race. “Looking for Flowers” is a work that seeks to question the photographer’s relationship with Belgium through a portrait of her friend Sarah, who also acts as a mirror to the photographer. The work is a search for home, identity, and freedom. The pictures were taken between Belgium and South Korea; some are images of Senegal from the photographer’s archive. The work is ongoing, as Awa and Sarah would like to complete the project by going back to Senegal to capture Sarah’s return after 10 years and eventually turn it into a photo book. “Currents 11: The Turn of Many Suns” is on view until Nov 3. Coproduced by Jester, Genk and Marres, Maastricht. ‘Currents 11: The Turn of Many Suns’ is te zien t/m 3 november. Een coproductie van @jestergenk en @marres_maastricht . // Awa Gaye, Looking for Flowers, 2023 - ongoing đŸ“· @gertjanvanrooij #Marres #Maastricht #Jester #Genk #hedendaagsecultuur #contemporaryculture #contemporaryart #currents #currents11 #theturnofmanysuns #groepstentoonstelling #groupexhibition #museum #artist #exhibition #culture #kunst #expositie #artwork #painting #video #installation #sculpture #limburg #visitmaastricht @aw.0aa
