Kuch manch waqt ke saath aur khoobsurat ho jaate hain.
Aur kuch rishton ki tarah apne lagne lagte hain.
Yeh deewarein…
yeh roshni…
yeh khaali kursiyan show se pehle wali khamoshi mein bhi
jaise mujhe pehchaan leti hain ab.
Pichli dafa yahan jo mehfil sajji thi,
uski taaliyan abhi tak dil mein basi hui hain.
Iss baar phir laut rahi hoon —
kuch naye geet lekar,
kuch naye jazbaat lekar.

Royal Opera House, Mumbai ✨
Beyond the skyline, the city is its murals, its koliwadas, its parks, its people and the art that holds all of it together.
In 2022, we sat with artists, changemakers, and experts to explore how placemaking transforms overlooked spaces into living centres of community, culture, and memory. From the truck-art murals of Bandra to the revamped lanes of Versova Koliwada, Mumbai is already showing us what is possible when art meets intention.

The Ship of Shireen Mansion
Why does a ship image top this Tardeo building?
It’s not just a pretty picture of a sea vessel with plump sails – on Shireen Mansion, the 1938-erected building at the entrance to Gamadia Colony in Tardeo, next to the old twin theatres Ganga-Jamuna.
There is a pair of interesting reasons to explain this ship motif.
The first reason is very apt to share today, April 28 being observed as World Art Deco Day. This date marks the anniversary of the 1925 opening of the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris.
Why were images of sea transport popular enough to occupy prominent niches?
The theme was part of the prevailing Art Deco trend. Pre-Independence Bombay architects consciously worked against non-colonial design. Ships, trains and planes – symbolising travel, speed and the surge to hit horizons beyond the Arabian Sea – widely embellished the new exteriors they created. The ship of Shireen Mansion is one such defining motif.
At the centre of the second story is Burjorji Bhesania, once the landlord of Shireen Mansion. His trade involved transporting bales of grass between Bombay’s seven islands. This could only be done in boats. Therefore, this nautical image. Look out for it!
Last night, Kavita Seth carried the words of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Amrita Pritam, Waseem Barelvi, and Josh Malihabadi at the Royal Opera House Mumbai.
Evoking the many varied landscapes of nazms, the ensemble crated an immersive experience, offering room for quiet contemplation and reflection.
Thank you to the artists, collaborators, and audiences who joined us. ✨
