To mark the historic and successful crewed commercial launch of the
@spacex #dragonendeavour on #may30, I am sharing this never before seen photograph of an #aerobee #hi sounding rocket launch taken by my grandfather Richard Manahl c. 1957. Shot at the Churchill Rocket Research Range in #manitoba Canada as part of the
@usarmy First Arctic Test Center, the project was part of the larger International Geophysical Year, one of the largest collaborative projects in earth and #space science. The project used the suborbital rockets to collect data on geomagnetism, airglow, ionospheric physics, cosmic rays and a wide range of other natural air and space phenomena. Early steps to crewed rocket launches and eventually the
@nasa missions that would put American men on the moon. The photo is one of many taken over combat and special assignment deployments to which 1SG Manahl was tasked, spanning all three major 20th century conflicts and earning him three Combat Infantryman Badges, a feat accomplished by less than 300 people that century. Still, somehow, he found a way to document almost all of it, including this assignment. 🇺🇸 #churchillrocketresearchrange #internationalgeophysicalyear #firstarctictestcenter #nasa #spacex #spaceexploration #kennedyspacecenter
