One time she said to me “I’m gonna color your hair but meet me at Sidewalk first, cause i wanna see a friend play.” — So i go over there and there’s this kid on stage literally exploding breaking strings and tearin it up. That was my first encounter with Langhorne Slim! So in one day i get a fine subtle autumn orange tint to my hair and discovered a great new artist too! The Philosophical Research Society’s 7th House, the Harry Smith Archives, and Los Angeles Filmforum are proud to welcome musician, artist, and filmmaker ADAM GREEN for a fascinating live presentation exploring the esoteric influences and occult creative practices of of artist, filmmaker, folklorist, and self-described alchemist of culture, Harry Everett Smith, followed by a screening of Smith’s enduring and most widely recognized experimental classic, HEAVEN AND EARTH MAGIC (1957-1962). ✨👁️✨ Here’s @averagecabbage talking about the esoteric creative processes he experimented with while making his feature film ALADDIN. Moving across Smith’s work as a unified field of inquiry, the presentation will consider how his deeply syncretic approach to image-making functioned as a kind of alchemical process: one that sought transformation not only of materials, but of perception itself. Green will also reflect on what Smith’s visionary methodology offers to artists today, including how he has drawn from these ideas within his own work. Presented by the Philosophical Research Society’s 7th House, The Harry Smith Archives, and Los Angeles Filmforum, this special event in “The Cosmic Collage of Harry Smith” series features artistic polymath Adam Green exploring the esoteric legacy of legendary experimentalist Harry Smith. The evening begins with a richly illustrated presentation by Green, a musician, artist, and filmmaker. Using curated slides and video, Green will delve into the occult foundations of Smith’s creative output, tracing the influences of alchemy, Kabbalah, hermetic philosophy, and symbolic systems.
