Lumbung Welkom! From 11 to 12 February, Level Five welcomed damdam in Brussels. damdam is an interwoven web of collectives emerging from de Appel’s Curatorial Programme, the Lumbung Practice Temporary Master Programme at Sandberg Instituut and Gudskul’s Collective Study Programme in Indonesia. During two days we got together for a Majelis (an assembly), studio visits, Footage therapy with Emili Allahbeigi, a collective walk around the city and finally a dinner 'My mother is Turkish' but not really' hosted by Asli Hatipoglu. The Cookery 2025 will open next Thursday 18th at 2pm with some Food for Thoughts: Intersectioning-Tech brings together voices that reimagine tech from between the 'margins' while navigating digital dependencies and envisioning communities and networks rooted in collective care opposing extraction, exploitation and ecocide. This panel invites participants with practices grounded in the theory of intersectionality to elaborate on pathways toward networks that sustain rather than exploit. Whole Earth Fractures is a discursive trajectory that invites participants to discussions about global intersections of technology, ecology, and community through the lenses of decolonial ecology and cross-cultural, inter-imperial analysis. The project engages with pluriversal perspectives on ecological resilience and resistance, with and against technology. With Ai Carmela Netîrk, Imane B. K. & natacha petites singularités. Fin? Ou juste un nouveau début? Ce dimanche, c’est la grande finissage de « Fin et Début » ! Mais pas question de partir sur une note triste… c’est une dernière chance festive de découvrir l’expo d’une manière unique. Visite exceptionnelle avec la co-commissaire Ismini Kyritsis @ismini_kyritsis et des artistes comme @avazevop @studio_alexverhaest , @vivienroubaud , @_menkman . Pas une visite classique, mais une expérience surprenante et conviviale. 🥂 Et après ? Sun-Flowers zijn apparaten die op zonne-energie werken en animaties van bloemen op e-paper schermen laten zien. Ze zijn energiezuinig en bootsen echte bloemen na: ze 'groeien' alleen als er genoeg zonlicht op valt. Drie apparaten - met verschillende technische elementen - worden van energie voorzien door het zonlicht dat door de ramen van iMAL binnendringt, of door het raam in iMAL’s ‘Suzanne’-studio. Voor de tentoonstelling heeft Ava tentoonstellingsmeubilair ontworpen en gebouwd om de technische elementen van de installatie uit te stallen. De bevindingen en ideeën die ze verzamelde tijdens de onderzoeksfase van het project worden gepresenteerd in een begeleidende tekst: (Un)Sustainable Media: Preliminary Notes on Cultural Degrowth. De publicatie zal ook tijdelijk beschikbaar zijn om te downloaden via een lokaal netwerk in de tentoonstellingsruimte. @avazevop was in maart/april 2024 in residentie bij iMAL als een van de geselecteerde projecten van onze iPO call 2024. Dit project wordt medegefinancierd door het @creative.eu en @dept.cjm ------ Sun-Flowers are solar powered devices that run animations of flowers on e-paper screens. They are energy efficient while they also mimic real flowers: they only ‘grow’ when they have enough sun provided. Three devices - of varying technical elements - will power themselves from the sunlight coming through iMAL’s windows, or alternatively from the window in the Suzanne studio. For the purpose of the exhibition Ava has designed and constructed exhibition furniture to display and house the technical elements of the installation. The observations and ideas gathered during her research stage of the project will be presented in the accompanying text: (Un)Sustainable Media: Preliminary Notes on Cultural Degrowth. The publication will also be temporarily available for download via a local network at the exhibition space. @avazevop was in residency at iMAL in March/April 2024 as one of the selected projects of our iPO call 2024. 🅡 𝐀𝐯𝐚 𝐙𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐩: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐥𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 Curated by @_etcmagazine 15/09 — 12/11/2023 Visual and intermedia artist Ava Zevop examines synthetic media as a new mode of cultural production while questioning the role of computation in the fields of epistemology and the everyday. The exhibition The Rise and Fail of Algorithmic Cultures is an intertwining of the artist's past projects and research, which focuses on the influence of different (mainly Western) cultural contexts on the construction of databases, the role of algorithms in generating images, and the resulting successes and failures of artificial intelligence. The sculptures in the exhibition are generated from an art historical database of three-dimensional scans of various artifacts, and together with the demonstration of different processes for generating images and texts, they highlight the ambivalence of machine learning models and their dependence on older epistemologies and categorizations, as well as on computational logic itself. #avazevop #etcmagazine #ravnikargalleryspace
