Real time progress, probably not breathing during this.
I’ve realized a general pattern of nature from painting winter trees especially: Nature is precise but random. I try to incorporate that saying into how I then paint nature. For example, the way light interacts through tree limbs and twigs makes them change their color along every inch. It’s observable and precise. But, the light also changes every second, making the colors quite random. So, instead of finding and mixing color for each minute change while painting, I copy the randomness instead. I start with the darkest major limbs to find the general shape, but then I keep my lightest brushstrokes loose, without thinking too much about how or where I’m placing them. Thinking too much leads to repetition and stiffness, which is architecture, not nature. This makes it easy to then see which twigs need to be next darkest, then next darkest, and so on
