NEW YORK NOSTALGIA @colinlocascio 💐🌟
New York has long been the source of inspiration for many an artist. For designer Colin Locascio, it is more of a nostalgic neighbor to his childhood. Born and raised in Queens, NY the emerging designer had his first official NYFW runway show this season with a collection that speaks to his roots - where he’s from, and who raised him. As a self-identified (grand)mama’s boy, Locascio’s FW23 collection was inspired by the personal style of both his mother and grandmother Frances, and by the wonderful places in NY they would take him as a child.
From frolicking to find fireflies, courting carousels, to basking at the beauty at the Botanical Gardens, Locascio injected his inner-child into his newest collection. While staying faithful to some of his brand’s signatures like the flower motif and his faux-furs, LoCascio also explored the use of sequins - see the surrealistic flower appliqué slip gowns. Few faux-furs flew down the runway this season, while there were still some coats to covet with the addition of patchwork trenches and denim jackets of all washes and wear. The collection is nostalgic in more ways than one, with disco collars, corduroy, and patchwork detailing there is an air of 70’s grunge glam one cannot miss.
As this season may mark his first official ‘show’ - but LoCascio is multiple seasons into his sartorial stay as a designer. This collection, he explains, is the start to the line maturing from a style standpoint. With more sweaters and sets to take you from a funky office ‘fit to a fashionable party than seasons past.
Collina Strada FW23 - We’re All In This Together. Inspired by the primal truths regarding our interconnectedness to each other and all living things - @collinastrada ’s show offers a new perspective in inclusivity and acceptance that truly includes ALL. From fairies to felines, models in prosthetics of various animals and creatures came cantering, crawling, and even caressing a dog down the runway in Strada’s Fall/Winter collection that includes looks that “honor both our inner show pony, who is playful and likes to ruffle feathers, and our inner workhorse, who is reliable, durable, and strangely practical.” (Strada Show Notes) An honorable example of both styles were showed and celebrated during the show, expanding our acceptance for all sides of style.
Along with highlighting the multiplicity of style options in clothes, Strada also aimed to highlight what it means for her customers to invest in purchasing a piece of her collection and keeping it for years to come. She explains to @geometricsleep for @voguerunway her thought process through a posing a reflective rhetorical question: “‘How does my customer purchase one piece of a Collina outfit and have it last and be a part of their wardrobe so they don’t feel like they are overspending on all of these things?’ She added, ‘What does the toned-down version of Collina look like while still being fun?’” Strada’s strive to creative styles that will stay the course while simultaneously celebrating free-expression of self & style was solidified through this very sartorially syndicated collection.
