âItâs the best job in the world! The places you go, the people you work with and the diversity of the things you work on, itâs unlike any other job.â
Ashley has been a Marine Tactical Officer (MTO) for over 10 years. Having a life-long passion for the ocean, joining the ABF was her first step into the maritime industry.
âMy parents owned a seafood business, so I was always around the ocean and knew I wanted to work on a boat.â
As an MTO, Ashley is an all-rounder on the vessel â watchkeeping, boarding and conducting ship husbandry. She has built strong connections with her crew mates, as they spend 3-4 weeks at sea in close quarters.
âThey are not just my crew mates, but my best mates. Because we work so closely together, you get to know them very well. You have that comradery, cooperation and need to rely on each other.â
Today on #WomenInMaritimeDay, weâre recognising the contribution of Ashley and all women across the maritime sector, and reinforcing the importance of safe, inclusive and supportive workplaces.
You might have already spotted Marco on our socials and that's because he's passionate about sharing photos and experiences from our District Office in Dampier WA.
Marco has had the opportunity to be based across Western Australia and the Northern Territory, where he captured this spectacular footage.
"The District Office opens a magical door, you never know what the new day brings. In one day, you can patrol the coastline by car, next day take the helicopter and the third day drive the boat."
"As a team we carry out different tasks such as boarding vessels at sea or alongside the wharf, baggage examination for crew members, vessel searches for prohibited items and conducting community engagement."
ABF staff recently laced up their running shoes to take part in the Runway Run charity event at @WSIAirport , raising funds for the Sydney Childrenâs Hospital Foundation (@schf.kids ).
With the airport opening later this year, participants had the rare chance to run and walk along the runway in support of a great cause. Many joined the community walk, while others took on the 7km and 14km events, with a few even completing the half-marathon. Two ABF Detector Dogs joined for part of the journey, adding plenty of fun and smiles along the way.
Every ABF Detector Dog starts as a curious pup learning the world one footpath at a time.
Our foster families help turn those early steps into confidence, calmness and capability â qualities that later help protect Australiaâs borders.
If you live in Melbourne, Greater Geelong, Ballarat or Whittlesea, you can be part of that journey.
We cover all expenses, from kibble to vet bills.
You provide 12 months of care, routine and realâworld experience.
Itâs important work â with a small wagging tail attached.

ABF-led Operation TEMPEST26 has resulted in the seizure of almost 3 million illicit cigarettes, more than 184kg of loose-leaf tobacco and more than 98,500 vaping devices across NSW and the ACT.
During the coordinated week of action, the ABF-led Illicit Tobacco National Disruption Group worked with Commonwealth, state and territory partners to target 34 locations, including 30 retailers and four air cargo depots. The operation also resulted in more than $27,000 cash seized, 23 short-term closure orders issued to non-compliant retailers, one retail store re-closed under an existing order, and 15 persons of interest identified.
In NSW, ABF officers attended four air cargo depots in Sydney while @NewSouthWalesHealth inspectors, supported by @NSWPolice , the ABF, and the @TGAgovau , conducted inspections at 24 retail outlets across the Central Coast. In the ACT, officers from Access Canberra, @ACTPolicing and the TGA, working with the ABF, targeted six retail outlets in Canberra.
These results show the strength of intelligence-led, nationally coordinated disruption activity. Illicit tobacco and unlawful vaping products do more than evade revenue and undercut legitimate businesses, they help fund criminal networks and can expose the community to unregulated and potentially harmful products.
Together with our partner agencies, the ABF remains committed to disrupting every stage of the illicit tobacco supply chain, from importation and storage through to distribution and retail, and creating an increasingly hostile environment for the criminal networks behind this trade.
Visit the ABF Newsroom for more details.
You'd think it would go without saying, but somehow we still see it happening:
1. It's incredibly dangerous for the person doing it
2. What goes in, must come out, and we have to deal with those excreted pellets đ¤˘
3. It doesn't work â we find them anyway
After all, wouldn't you much rather have some Duty Free snacks instead?
While the robes might be a little big for Detector Dog Jedi, the mission sure isnât.
Alongside his padawan (handler) Sam, Jedi uses specialist training and focus to detect prohibited and restricted items and safeguard Australiaâs border.
This is the way.

As an island nation, we rely on maritime trade. But criminals are also using cargo vessels to try and get prohibited items into the country.
This Roll-on roll-off (RORO) cargo ship bringing vehicles into Western Australia was recently searched by our team in Fremantle.
Weâre responsible for managing the arrival and departure of international vessels, their crew and cargo across approximately 224 wharves and 71 ports along Australiaâs 37,000 kilometres of coastline.
To effectively manage the threat posed by the identified high-risk vessels, we conduct planned enforcement activity to locate potential importations of border-controlled substances.
If something felt off about the above â youâre not mistaken. And weâre not talking about taste in movies.
Every day we see counterfeit goods attempted to be imported into the country. They might look like the real deal, but take a closer look and the dodgy details reflect a poorly made and bad quality product.
For many products there is a legitimate and serious risk to Aussies who purchase counterfeit goods online. Recent examples have included;
⢠counterfeit oil filters that do not filter oil
⢠wheel rims that shatter in low-speed pothole impacts
⢠spark plugs capable of causing massive engine damage
And while that Dolce & Banana clutch or Pattergonia fleece you bought online probably doesnât risk your personal safety, you are buying a flawed product and supporting an illegal trade that could involve serious criminal activity and harm.
