SOUND SALON VOL. 3 📢
For Sound Salon Vol. 3 we are beyond stoked to have one of Houston's most genre-defying ensembles, @aurum.son , performing for our community.
Blending jazz, global music traditions, and experimental sound through improvisation and evolving composition - Aurum Son creates soundscapes that are expansive and deeply attuned. Their work moves fluidly between structure and spontaneity in its rhythm, tone, and texture in a way that is absolutely gripping.

Finale: The Joy Luck Club. Final performance notes: “The Joy Luck Club spent almost two years on The New York Times bestseller lists. It was the first time many readers understood the culture clash of first generation Asian Americans, and how they are often caught between the traditions of the Old World, and the demands of the New. The novel features four Chinese women who moved to San Francisco, and were joined by friendship through their weekly gatherings to play mah jong. Their American born daughters do not understand their mothers, but the novel showed that the tension between mothers and daughters is universal, and in this way, we are more alike than different.”

Section Three: Bless Me, Ultima. Final performance notes: “Bless Me, Ultima was the first bestseller by a Mexican-American author. Prior to the early 1970s, Mexican-American literature was largely relegated to small presses, but this was the first book that introduced the reading public to the distinct cultural traditions of New Mexico. It showed that curanderas, or curanderos, were more than just witch doctors, but spiritual leaders of their communities. It also highlighted the multigenerational aspect of Mexican-American culture in which both old and young people form tight, loving relationships.”

Section Two: The Kite Runner. Final performance notes: “The Kite Runner was published two years after 9/11. It was one of the first times the American mainstream public saw the Afghani people in a positive light, and understood how the Taliban also terrorized their own people. The novel helped usher in a more sympathetic view of Afghanistan, its people, and its culture.”

Opening section of Carnegie Summer. Final performance notes: “think about the imaginative possibilities that reading offers. Think about the worlds it opens up, and the creativity it inspires. While you want to continue being direct and clear in the movement, think about being in a perpetual dreamscape that can only be unlocked through the act of reading.”
Danced to a score with an extrapolation of the Reading Rainbow theme song by the amazing @aurum.son ! Costumes by @ashleyhorndance_and_design . Special thanks to @artintheheart.htx for hosting this special work. Photos by the incredible @lynnlanephotography .
Carnegie Summer was funded in part by a Support for Artists and Creative Individuals Grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
