Happy 115th birthday to Eero Saarinen! Shown here is his Bell Labs, in Holmdel, New Jersey. Functioning for over four decades as a research and development facility for Bell Telephones, Bell Labs’ internal-facing design promotes chance interactions between the many different departments housed within. A decade ago the building was renamed Bell Works and rehabbed by @alexandergorlinarchitects as one of the world’s largest complex for high tech start-ups. It recently gained additional notoriety as a set for the HBO show Severance. Copies of the New Jersey issue featuring Bell Labs/Bell Works is still available, via link in bio. UTOPIA IS HERE! (if you want it) . During New York Design Week we launched the new issue of AUGUST at the USM loft in SoHo. The issue is now ready to ship to their forever homes if you haven’t ordered yours! All pre-purchased orders as well as subscriptions are in the mail. . The @usmmodularfurniture loft was designed by the late Ali Tayar and it was inspired by the USM Buchli House, which is featured in the issue. Our launch took place on a gorgeous evening on the rooftop terrace with many of our contributors past and present, with refreshments by @enlightenment wines. We wish you a utopian summer and good reading! . Photos by the multi-hyphenate @danrubinstein (last photo)

The USM Buchli House, 1969, by Fritz Haller. All design cognoscenti knows and covets Haller’s @usmmodularfurniture , but did you know that Haller also designed three modular architectural systems for USM? They include the USM factory, as well as this house for the family that owns the furniture company. Read more about Haller’s modular world in the new issue of AUGUST Journal. Pre-order now, link in bio. ✍️ @phillipdenny 📸 @misterngo

Inspired by the shapes of Froebel Gifts – the influential educational toys from the turn of the 20th century – AUGUST has collaborated with e15 to produce a limited edition set of three new Euclidian shapes. Crafted from hardwood, these oversized objects can be used as paperweights or simply create a neo-Bauhaus composition on their own. AUGUST is a new kind of travel magazine: each issue focuses on one place or idea, immersing the reader in its rich art, architecture, and design scene. It features the sights and souls that form the fabric of each place’s unique culture. Each issue, each story, is a discovery—capturing the wonderment that is often missing in our media- saturated lives, a sense of experiencing something for the first time. Authentic travel is about encounters rather than things. In combining our two favorite obsessions – travel and design – AUGUST will impart a shared experience with personal meaning. @augustjournal @misterngo @e15furniture #Utopia #neoFroebelobjects #augustjournal #e15furniture #e15 #salonedelmobile2024 #milandesignweek2024 #mdw24

Happy birthday to AUGUST’s creative director Douglas Riccardi (@memonewyork )! Douglas has been an indispensable part of the journal since day one, and one of our funnest part of every issue is to commission a custom typeface specific to the theme. For UTOPIA Douglas co-designed this typeface with designer @rachael.otf There are two faces, a single dot for large headlines and a triple dot for smaller headlines and the front cover logo.

Exhibition Alert: Toshiko Takaezu: Worlds Within The Noguchi Museum March 20, 2024 – July 28, 2024 . This is the first major retrospective of Toshiko Takaezu, considered one of the most important postwar American artists. Born in Hawaii of Okinawan heritage, Takaezu studied with Maija Grotell at Cranbrook then settled in New Jersey, where she taught at Princeton, but Hawaii’s landscapes and cultures were never far from her palette. In addition to her ceramics the exhibition also contains her tapestries and paintings, many seen for the very first time. Curated by @glenn_adamson , @annezilotti , and the @noguchimuseum ’s Curator Kate Wiener, the show displays the extraordinary range of Takaezu’s practice, which evolved over seven decades into a unified approach to ceramics, sculpture, painting, and environments.

Doris Duke’s Hawaiian hideaway, Shangri La, by Marion Sims Wyeth, 1936-38 . The heiress Doris Duke built her Hawaii estate in the shadows of Honolulu’s Diamond Head to house her growing collection of Islamic art, which she started buying during her first honeymoon. Now a public museum run by the Honolulu Museum of Art, Shangri La is a flashback to another world where collecting and philanthropy is very different than today, something that the museum’s administrators openly acknowledge and work with. The site is as spectacular as the collection, and it’s a must-see when in Honolulu.
