UPCOMING! Simorgh: a self-portrait May 23 – July 18, 2026 Reception: Friday, May 22 | 6 – 8 PM Audain Gallery at the SCA 149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver Wyldie Bracewell, Andrew Curtis, Alex Calcagno, Carlo Marchet, Chris Outten, and Taha Saraei Simorgh: a self-portrait takes inspiration from The Conference of the Birds, a twelfth century poem by Farid ud-Din Attar. In the poem, all the world’s birds seek wisdom from the hoopoe, a wise bird they elect as leader in their search for truth. The hoopoe suggests they seek out the mythic Simorgh, the only bird with the power to access the divine. The journey toward Simorgh is long, filled with many hills and valleys. Of the thousands of birds who start out, many make their excuses, settle down, get lost, or meet untimely ends. Eventually, only thirty birds remain. After passing the seventh valley, they realize “si” means thirty and “morgh” means birds. Therefore, the meaning they were searching for was always already within them as Simorgh is actually themselves. Or rather, Simorgh, is a shared self, composed of the many selves who were able to complete the journey. Through a series of artworks such as painting, sculpture, photography, video, and sound, the exhibition explores notions of selfhood, love, and dissolution in the hopes that a common self-portrait may begin to emerge. @sfudance @sfu.theatre @sfumusic @611studio @sfufilmstudentunion  @theatreproduction @sfu_apcs @scastudentunioncommons  @fcatatsfu @sfuvan @simonfraseru @precursorlab @audaingallery_sca @sfulive @sfutheatre.media @sca_student_projects

Start singing! VEX Choir February 24, 2026 – February 9, 2027 Every second Tuesday at 5:30 PM Audain Gallery at the SCA 149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver Everyone is invited and welcome to participate. The Vancouver Experimental Choir (VEX) is taking up residency in the Audain Gallery! Please join us for our first session on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at 5:30 PM. VEX was formed by Larissa Loyva in 2025 as an anti-capitalist experiment to engage singers and non-singers alike. We strive to connect with our voices – literally and figuratively – and explore autonomy from traditional music forms, venues and the expectations of performance. Working from prompts and exercises like that of the Fluxus movement, composers such as Pauline Oliveros, and even occasionally reading the artwork in the gallery as a score, the choir aims to sit with the practice of the voice and of deep listening. Because the choir is not working toward a performance, members may attend when they wish. VEX requires no commitment! Membership is open to all SCA students, faculty, and staff, as well as non-SFU folks who wish to sing! Biography Larissa Loyva (she/her) is a composer and singer whose musical experience spans pop, rock, experimental, electronic and classical. She has contributed to numerous Vancouver recordings and has released four solo albums as Kellarissa. www.larissaloyva.ca @sfudance @sfu.theatre @sfumusic @611studio @sfufilmstudentunion  @theatreproduction @sfu_apcs @scastudentunioncommons  @fcatatsfu @sfuvan @simonfraseru @precursorlab @audaingallery_sca

📣📣📣One night only! 📣📣📣With Katie Belcher, Edie Fake, Emily C. R. Hill, Sam Digges Hunter, Sasha J. Langford, Lee Su-Feh, Jonathan Middleton, Kevin Romain, and Masha Weisberg. SFU School for the Contemporary Arts is pleased to announce Levers & Counterweights, a one-night presentation of works by students in the first-year graduate-level Studio in Contemporary Arts class. While the works in the exhibition vary significantly, drawing from distinct and multiple disciplinary influences, the selection of works reflects conversations that have unfolded over the course of the last two terms. A notable recurring topic over this period has been the recognition that small actions and reactions can influence, develop into, or make part of, larger systems – even at a global scale. 🎪🎡🥂SCA’s studios are located on the third floor of 611 Alexander Street. There are two entrances, one with stairs, and one next to an elevator. We will have volunteer ushers at both entrances. The entrance that is wheelchair accessible is the main entrance on the East side of the building, beside a tall, blue tower. The elevator is located left of the entrance inside. The other entrance has SCA’s sign above the doors, and is stairs only. Should you have questions about accessibility or require additional information, please message us. @sfucontemporaryarts @611studio @sfumusic @sfudance @sfufilmstudentunion @sfu.theatre @sfu_apcs @theatreproduction @sfu_film

Please join us at the Audain Gallery at 6pm on Wednesday, April 15th for the opening reception of our 2026 BFA Graduating Exhibition titled Kerplunk! Kerplunk! presents the work of visual art students graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. The sound from which the exhibition draws its name is an onomatopœic or echoic formation intended to imitate the sound or the effect of the fall of some heavy body. It is a sound with the capacity to surprise which announces itself with a decisive thud. It is a word that hems closely to the phenomena it describes. The works presented rage from a large scale painting and collage, to video, sculpture, drawing and installation. As a cohort that has explored in parallel to one another over the past 4 years, this presentation shows a furtive attempt to chart a shared sensibility across diverse material approaches and conceptual concerns.

And one last ride in the Gondola with fabulous 1st-year Visuals art students during our public art project ALIN. As a class assignment in the School for the Contemporary Arts’ first-year course CA 161, students realized anamorphic public artworks at various locations throughout the Convocation Mall and towards the Academic Quadrangle. Anamorphics are “drawings in space”—forms that can only be perceived from a single, specific point of view. This 5-day exhibition intervenes in the everyday routines through which students and SFU’s broader community experience the campus’s architectural and social environment. The project offers unexpected perspectives on the campus and engages the university as a space for communication and interaction, as well as a site of knowledge production. List of students: Constance Arden, Randi Cunningham, Shakti Gulati, Lee Jordan, Steve Kong, Dorothy Chung Lau, Emi Ma, Lee Nil, Sonya McGuire, Ryder Peters, Rachel Popowitz, Natalie Shum, Claud States, Cam George, Charlize Urrutia, Rain Wu, Janice Yen, Sancy Zheng. @sfucontemporaryarts @611studio @audaingallery_sca

@rayrayboisjoly is teaching CA269/369: Critical Craft this summer from May 11 to June 9th! It looks Awesome! This course will look at craft-based material production and how this approach can critically frame understandings of contemporary artistic practices. We will not consider craft as a discrete category of objects such as ceramics, woodworking, the textile arts, etc. Instead, we will look at craft as a necessary component of the functioning of all art. We will engage writing about craft in relation to art and use our studio time to learn varied skills and techniques aimed at understanding how labour or work provides the conditions for embodying knowledge. Some of the skills we will look at include bookbinding, picture framing, image transfers and digital embroidery. The class will consider that the content of a work is only as important as how it is made. Work must not simply be about something, it must also become something itself.🍒🍒
