ok, a bit of a story:
a few years ago, during peak pandemic, i decided i wanted to start performing live more, with my guitar, and with my voice. easy, right? i've been performing my entire life, first as a dancer and then as a DJ - how much harder can singing be than DJing? well, turns out, as much as i love sharing and mixing tracks for a dance floor and have a deep respect for the roots of that culture, there is no comparison to the level of vulnerability faced singing in front of an audience.
and well...i couldn't do it. i'd get choked up, my throat would tighten, and i would often burst into tears.
but i kept going. and then i remembered this interesting phenomenon that i came across years ago: the way cows respond to live music when it's played in their vicinity. it's remarkable, and nobody's totally sure why, but they seem to come towards the vibration of the music and actually create an audience. i thought, what if I did a concert for some cows? could i sing in front of them and get over my fear?
in early 2021,
@activepassiveconcerts , an incredible gulf island-based experimental and ambient festival that is lovingly organized by my friends
@fallowtwin and
@meteoric.xx , put out a proposal for pandemic-friendly performances. with no expectation, i proposed a concert for cows. they loved the idea, generously sourced some island cows, and helped me set up. it was a great success! although it didn't end up as part of the festival that year, i have a ton of footage, audio and research from the experience. it turned out to be way bigger than me and overcoming my fear of singing, and i am now getting organized to create a documentary.
fast forward to a few months ago, i'd admittedly been spending a little too much time on twitter,, but was very fortunate to connect with some folks that found this special interest as interesting as i do. i recently had an awesome chat with amazing brooklyn-based music writer
@themollyzone about this ecomusicology project, my creative background, "scene" vs. "community", journalism, art, fighting f*^°ism, and inspiration. link in bio :)
(ps. it worked, i can sing in front of people now 🐄)
