Matthias Bitzer: Paradoxe Ecke, 2019, Öl und Acryl auf roher Leinwand, Spiegel, Holzrahmen bemalt, 186 x 166 x 6 cm In der zweiten Ausstellungsebene findet ihr dieses ungewöhnliche Werk von Matthias Bitzer (*1975 in Stuttgart; lebt in Berlin). Die Aspekte Realität und Illusion prägen sein Werk grundlegend. Zeitgeschehen, Wahrnehmungen, Identitäten und Erinnerungen verschränken sich in Malerei, Skulptur, Collagen und Wandzeichnungen zu mehrschichtigen Ebenen. Seine Formensprache pendelt zwischen Figuration und Abstraktion. Zentrales Thema ist die Frage nach Wirklichkeit und unserer individuellen Definition davon. Wie sieht die Welt für jeden Einzelnen aus, und wie entstehen daraus persönliche Blickwinkel? Die „Paradoxe Ecke“ zeigt ein Porträt in drei Dimensionen: Außen wird die eigentliche Rückseite des Gemäldes sichtbar. Innen und Außen verschränken sich. Und doch erscheinen zwei Personen – das äußere und das innere Porträt ähneln einander und sind trotzdem verschieden. Eine weitere Dimension entsteht durch einen Spiegel, der die Blicke reflektiert: den Blick der gemalten Person, aber auch den Blick des Betrachters oder der Betrachterin. Bitzer spielt hier mit den Themen Selbstwahrnehmung, Fiktion und Realität. Matthias Bitzer studiert 1998 bis 2004 an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe. The conversation will explore Bitzer’s practice, tracing its evolution over the years and offering insight into the ideas, processes, and references that shape his work. Expanding on themes of perception, participation, and transformation, the talk will deepen the experience of the works on view and the ways in which they activate the role of the viewer.

What is the human being? — Immanuel Kant The works of Matthias Bitzer unfold like a visual puzzle: only from a distance do the individual, uniformly formatted artworks come together to form a larger whole. Spread across the wall like an explosion, they initially appear overwhelming, yet at the same time invite the viewer to come closer to read, to decipher, to understand. After the first impression comes the attempt to decode the individual works, to read them. One searches for a beginning or a point of departure within the installation, across its entire surface. Are these memories? Quotations? Observations of current events? Or even historical events that have imprinted themselves on the collective memory? A bit of everything.
