Yesterday I found out I lost an extremely close friend. Not just a friend who comes and goes, but a life friend. Someone who was part of my heart, my history, and my family.
Shelly wasn’t just close to me — she was close to a handful of my closest lifetime friends too. We’ve all been connected for 25+ years, so I can’t even say I lost a friend. I lost family.
Shelly was one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever known. She was motherly, sisterly, and a true friend in every sense. When we were down and out, she gave us shelter, kept us fed, supported us, and loved us like we were her own.
She gave herself the name “Mama,” and honestly, that’s exactly who she was to us. In a lost boys kind of way, she was our Mama. She helped hold us together, gave us a place to escape, make music, laugh, chill, and just be around each other.
We were Mag 7, and Shelly was part of us. I don’t know if we would have existed the same way, or kept that bond as strong, if it wasn’t for her.
I still don’t fully know what happened. I just know I lost one of the closest people I’ve ever had in my life, and it hurts more than words can explain.
My thoughts and prayers go out to her family. I heard Shelly lost her dad just two days before her passing, and as heartbreaking as that is, it gives me some comfort knowing he was waiting for her at Heaven’s gates.
I had been out of touch with Shelly for almost a year, and I feel guilty for that. So please, if you have someone like Shelly in your life, check on them. Call them. Go see them. Tell them you love them while you still can.
I love you so much, Shelly. I’ll miss you until I see you again. 💔
