✨Another year older, and all I wanted was to feel like I’d stepped inside a fairytale.✨
I’ve been thinking a lot about folklore lately, the old stories, the ones passed down before they were ever written. Spoken beside fires, carried across borders, whispered from mother to daughter across centuries. There’s something extraordinary about that. The idea that a story can outlive everyone who ever told it.
The Princess and the Pea is a Hans Christian Andersen story from 1835, though it almost certainly draws from folk traditions far older than that. A young woman arrives at a castle in a storm, drenched and windswept, claiming to be a true princess. The royal family is skeptical. So the queen, quietly and without a word, places a single pea at the bottom of a bed stacked with twenty mattresses and twenty featherbeds. In the morning, the girl confesses she slept terribly — bruised and restless, kept awake all night by something she couldn’t even name. Only a real princess, the story tells us, could be so exquisitely, impossibly sensitive. She passes the test. She wins the prince. The pea is placed in a museum. The end.
I have always loved that the pea goes to a museum. That a tiny, humble, absurd little thing becomes an artifact. Proof that once upon a time, someone felt everything.
These stories are little lanterns held up in the dark to show us something true about being human. And what this one says, quietly, underneath all the mattresses and the royalty and the happily ever after, is that tenderness isn’t weakness. That feeling everything deeply is not a flaw to be corrected but a mark of something rare and real.
So for my birthday, I made myself a little world out of lavender and roses and a heart-shaped cake and I lived inside it for a day. Soft and sensitive and a little ridiculous in the best possible way — draped across a tower of mattresses in a purple gown, completely unbothered.
Another year. Still enchanted. Still feeling everything.
