Santorini. First visit, hundred degrees, ninety percent humidity, five hours off the cruise ship to capture this place before we had to turn around and head back. We ran it like a mission and loved every minute. These were our first frames in Oia. Two return trips since and it still hits the same. Made sense to lead with where it started. The story here is wild. Oia sits on the rim of a flooded caldera, what’s left of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history around 1600 BCE. The whole crescent shape of the island is the blast radius. Locals rebuilt over and over through earthquakes and eruptions, carving homes into the cliffs and painting everything white to bounce the heat. The blue domes weren’t always blue. That came later, somewhere between tradition and tourism, and now it’s the signature of the Cyclades. You walk through Oia and you’re walking on top of a volcano that shaped the Mediterranean. The mysteries of Egypt keep unfolding. This is the serdab at Djoser’s Step Pyramid in Saqqara. Inside sits the oldest life size statue in Egyptian history, sealed in stone for nearly 4,700 years. Two holes carved into the wall so the pharaoh’s ka could watch the rituals and stare north into the eternal stars. Place your lens to the hole and he stares back. Kato Dool means The Big Home in Nubian and that is exactly what it felt like. Hand built into the hillside of Gharb Soheil, every wall painted in colors borrowed from the desert and the Nile below. We were welcomed not as guests but as family. Tea poured before we asked. Stories shared on the terrace as the sun dropped behind the palms. The Nubian people who run this place carry a kind of warmth I have not felt anywhere else in my travels. They build with their hands, cook from their own farm, and treat strangers like they have known them for years. Our friends here even gave us Nubian names, Unati and Asher, a gift we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. We loved our stay so much we will never forget it. Aswan stays with you. Community in LA hits different. When you’re out here grinding as a photographer, it’s easy to get lost in the algorithm, the gear, the endless scroll. But every so often you look up and realize the real ones are the people standing next to you, cameras in hand, chasing the same light. Yesterday was one of those days. Huge thank you to everyone who pulled up to the first ever @insta360 Photo Walk in America out in Venice Beach. Co-hosting this one alongside @nyctme was something special, watching strangers become friends over shared frames and swapped stories. That’s what this is all about. Not the follower counts, not the brand deals, just creators showing up for each other and making something out of nothing but a boardwalk, some golden hour, and good energy.
