#Repost @unframedpodcast (@get_repost ) ・・・ Episode 19 of @unframedpodcast is a very special and important one to me - with my friend and colleague Louise Van Der Bijl. In 2010, Louise and I co-founded Assemblage, a non-profit artist-run organisation, which aimed to provide support, education and networks for emerging artists. After 9 years of hosting many workshops, peer mentoring sessions, exhibitions and studio spaces - all of which encouraged community, sharing, collaboration and professional practice for hundreds of artists - Assemblage has decided to close its metaphorical doors. In this episode, Louise and I reflect on how and why Assemblage started, our failures and successes, the ever-changing Johannesburg arts landscape and our ultimate decision to close the organization. @assemblageza @louiserossvanderbijl Listen on Apple Podcasts or at the link in bio above #unframed #unframedpodcast #artpodcast #artconversations #contemporaryart #southafricanart #artistinterview #assemblage #collectives #artistrunorganisation #community #collaboration #connect #share #create #makearthappen

Throwback to mid 2016 when we moved to 1 Marshall St, Ferrairsdorp, Johannesburg. We reimagined our space to include several studios, an exhibition space and the Prints on Paper workshop. We launched the exhibition space in Sept 2016 with the group exhibition, Shift, curated by @gontsemathabathe and @louiserossvanderbijl . The space remained open until Jan 2018 when the decision was made to close it. #assemblage #art #exhibition #Johannesburg #throwback #artists #artistruncentre #MakeArtHappen

Throwback to the first Fresh Produce exhibition in 2014 at the @turbineartfair in Johannesburg. Supported by Rand Merchant Bank (RMB). The exhibition used the Turbine Hall and Newtown as its starting point.  Works that were produced for the show responded in some way to a series of quotes about the history of the area. The conversations that developed between the works spoke broadly to the history of the area but also to our identity as South Africans and our ongoing struggles with understanding the urban versus rural spaces that so many of us exist between. Artists: Adelheid Von Maltitz, Allen Laing, Anastasia Pather, Angus MacKinnon, Anthea Pokroy, Audrey Anderson, Bronwen Salton, Carly Whitaker, Dot Vermeulen, Ferdinand Kidd, Jessica Foli, Katrine Claassens, Kwanele Mboso, Leandre Le Roux, Lungile Zuma, Mandy Coppes-Martin, Maria van Rooyen, Minenkulu Ngoyi, Mirella Bandini, Nathan Jansen Van Vuuren, Nellien Brewer, Oliver Mayhew, Pebofatso Mokoena, Pierre le Riche, Portia Dube, Ross Passmoor, Sakhile Gumbi, Sandile Radebe, Setlamorago Mashilo, Shenaz Mahomed, Similo Hlatshwayo, Suzy Bernstein, Tabita Rezaire, Tawanda Mufambi, Yael Feldman #art #assemblage #artists #exhibition #Johannesburg #freshproduce #turbineartfair #MakeArtHappen

Throwback to Degrees of Separation at the Absa Gallery, Johannesburg in September 2014. In an interview in 2013, art critic Mary Corrigall observed that ‘artists don't look enough at each other's work’. Degrees of Separation, a collaborative and process-driven group exhibition by Assemblage, aimed to respond to and interrogate this observation, to encourage conversation, collaboration and peer review amongst the invited exhibiting artists. Through a series of peer mentoring workshops leading up to the exhibition, the artists spent six months looking directly at, interrogating and responding to one another’s practice and artworks Exhibiting artists were: Allen Laing, Alphabet Zoo (Isaac Zavale and Minenkulu Ngoyi), Anthea Pokroy, Audrey Anderson, Bevan de Wet, Carly Whitaker, Dirk Bahmann, Lois Anguria, Louise Ross, Mandy Coppes-Martin, Mandy Johnston, Nathan Jansen Van Vuuren, Phumulani Ntuli, Ross Passmoor, Yael Feldman, and Zwelethu Machepha #assemblage #exhibition #art #artists #absagallery #collaboration #MakeArtHappen #Johannesburg #southafricanart

Throwback to the Diptych exhibition held in Braamfontein in Sept 2013. Diptych, a group exhibition opened in Braamfontein on 19 September 2013. Diptych was an exhibition of 45 artists speaking to each other and to the audience; jousting in a tete-a-tete and tit for tat of 23 conversations, dialogic performances and interactive explorations. Their conversations are real and gritty, following on from a long line of conversations between artists: “We must talk to each other as much as we can, [Matisse] told Pablo one day. “When one of us dies, there will be some things the other will never be able to talk about with anyone else” (Gilot/ Lake 1964, 264). Exhibiting artists were: Gary Stephens | Zwelethu Machepha; Bev Butkow | Yael Feldman; Rozan Cochrane | Daandrey Steyn; Pebofatso Mokoena | Neo Matloga; Rebecca Haysom | Simone Haysom; Lise Van Schaik | Ann Roberts; Audrey Anderson | Craig Muller; Oliver Mayhew | Lwandiso Njara; Delene Human | Albertus van der Westhuizen; Jay Caboz | Matthew Kay; Carly Whitaker; Louise Ross | Ross Passmoor;  Bevan De Wet | Candice Cruse;  Philippe Bousquet | Andile Buka; Sita Suzanne | Wayne Reddiar; Naomi Van Niekerk | Arnaud Van Vliet;  Heidi Fourie | Allen Laing; Nondumiso Msimanga | Roger Lambert; Sandile Radebe | Mandy Johnston;  St John Fuller | Nellien Brewer; Poorvi Bhana | Danelle Jansen Van Rensberg; Claire Jorgensen | Elgin Rust; Anthea Pokroy | Lavendhri Arumugam; Nathan Jansen Van Vuuren | Gina Van Zyl; Bongani Njalo | Phumulani Ntuli #assemblage #exhibition #diptych #art #artists #collaboration #conversations #braamfontein #MakeArtHappen #Johannesburg #southafricanart
