On April 7th, the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi. we gathered at the Aspen Institute for a moment that will stay with us. Claver Irakoze, a genocide survivor, educator and storyteller from Rwanda, shared his living memory: not as history, but as a call to action. In conversation with Gayle Smith, Former Administrator of USAID, and hosted in partnership with the @SkollFoundation , the room held space for grief, truth, and resolve. Claver’s words cut through: genocide is never spontaneous. It is built — through discrimination, propaganda, and silence. And it can be prevented — through leadership, courage, and the refusal to look away.
