Ahmed Shihab-Eldin is free after 52 days in a Kuwaiti prison.
I spoke to his friend and former adviser to Middle East Peace envoy Ashish Prashar about the case, the mass repression of free speech in the Gulf and the power of the support that Ahmed received from around the world during his detention.
@skynews #ahmedshihabeldin
âHe [Ahmed Shihab-Eldin] was detained on the 3rd of March; he has had very infrequent contact with his legal representatives, but we donât know his conditions, and he hasnât had no long form legal advice, and heâs been held without charge for 6 weeks now. This feels to me, an excuse to attack journalism through fake, anti-terror, national security laws.â
We call on Kuwaiti authorities to release Kuwaiti-American journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin, detained under new security and fake news laws. Journalism is not a crime. #freeahmed #FreeAhmedEldin #journalismisnotacrime
Sara Qudah, CPJâs Regional Director, MENA.Â
âWe are seeing escalating censorship of journalists and news outlets across the world in relation to the Iran war, including in the Gulf. National security is being used as a pretext to crack down on freedom of speech and Shihab-Eldinâs detention is emblematic of that. He must be freed immediatelyâ.
Former Advisor to the Middle East Peace Envoy, Ashish Prashar, said:
âJournalism is fundamentally about telling the truth; it is essential work, an act of service, and one the public needs in order to make informed decisions. To arbitrarily imprison a journalist and label that work âterrorismâ or âendangering national securityâ is a grave misstep. The State Department and Foreign Office need to demand the release of all media workers from their allies in the Gulf. Anything less would be an abandonment of their ethical obligations and an endorsement of authoritarian practices.â
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is coordinating efforts to help bring attention to the case of U.S.-Kuwaiti journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin who is currently in detention in Kuwait.
Shihab-Eldin, an award-winning journalist who posts prolifically on social media, has not posted online or been seen in public in Kuwait â where he was visiting family â since March 2.
It is understood that authorities have charged him with spreading false information, harming national security, and misusing his mobile phone â vague and overly broad accusations that are routinely used to silence independent journalists.

Talked to @tehrantimes79 about ongoing U.S. calls for negotiations with Iran while escalating military pressure and threats.
âNegotiations are theatre.â â Ashish Prashar, former advisor to the Middle East peace envoy, dismisses US talks with Iran as a face-saving act for Western media while Trump seeks an exit from a losing war.
Prashar warns Iran not to rely on any diplomatic guarantees: âAs long as Israel exists, they will be attacked again & again... Everything they rebuild will be destroyed. They must not rely on any guarantee; itâs all a lie. Every word of it.â
âTrump is losing this war and is looking for a way to come out of it looking like the saviour and victor,â Prashar tells Tehran Times. He notes that if Trump carried out his threats, âIran would not hold backâ & US support would vanish.
Prashar delivers a sharp critique of both the US & Israel: Both were âfounded on violence and genocide and thatâs all they know. The truth is the rest of the world knows this as well.â He says Western enablers made this moment âinevitable.â
âThere is no real diplomatic solution with these two who have never honored a ceasefire,â Prashar concludes. Iranâs only option: âStay the course because the economic cost to the West and the globe will humble them faster than anything else.â

March 26 is a revolutionary day for me. Over two decades ago on this day I was released from incarceration.
Iâve lived a life thatâs taken me from prison to politics and Palestine and learnt that the task of transforming society can only be achieved by the people - not heroes, not celebrities, not stars.
They will try to disarm us by criminalizing us, they will try to strip our politics of legitimacy by recasting us as reckless, violent and self-destructive but as long as there is oppression, resistance is not only our right, it is our duty.
A minute of living with dignity and pride is better than a thousand years of a miserable life under the boots of oppression.
To my partner @soulcarousel - you have shown me that with all their power the oppressive forces in our world are trapped, besieged and they are fighting a losing battle. Youâre the revolutionary I aspire to be every day.
To my our son I donât know if weâll change the world but I know we will spark a change in this world.
You are both the light in my eyes, my universe and I want nothing more than beautiful days for our little family. I love you â¤ď¸
Our liberation is inevitable!
đ¨ UEFAâs Tax Privileges vs. Human Rights: The Secret Strategy.
Yesterday, the parliament in the Swiss Canton of Vaud rejected a resolution that would have held UEFA accountable for complicity in the crimes of the Israeli regime. Publicly, UEFA keeps its tax privileges and Israel stays on the pitch.
But behind closed doors, the reality is completely different.
In my latest investigation for Domani, an exclusive internal source revealed the cynical strategy at the top of European football: ÂŤEveryone wants Israel out, but no one wants to do the dirty work.Âť
While UEFA publicly avoided the clash, leadership is allegedly waiting for the Swiss government or federal courts to force their hand, allowing them to suspend Israel without taking the political blame.
The battle isn't over. Campaigners like Ashish Prashar are taking the fight to the higher courts. Will justice finally do what football politics refuses to touch?

Iran has no incentive for a ceasefire - they negotiated in good faith before.
In ten days the Iranians have done more to decolonize the region than anyone before them. Why should they stop now?

In November 2025 the FAI called on UEFA to suspend Israel from international football. Today the FAI and the Taoiseach have agreed that Ireland will fulfill its Nations League fixtures against Israel. No thank you.
