Update: This event is has passed. Please continue to support fundraising efforts for disabled People of the Global Majority or BIPOC. Ingat ka in Tagalog, (ᜁᜅᜆ᜔ written in Babayin) roughly translates to “take care,” “take care of yourself,” or “be careful” in English. Depending on the tone and context, it can be a goodbye message, a sweet reminder, a warning, or a threat. My understanding of care has changed over time with my understanding of disability and disabled care, especially outside of existing systems. With these ideas in mind, I invite folx around so-called “Seattle” to join me for ingat ka: a f*n-d*R@i -s-*r for disabled bipoc on Sunday, April 5 at 12-4pm in Filipinotown, Chinatown-International District. We will be evenly splitting contributions from this event to 5 disabled BIPOC (including myself) for basic needs like food and housing or shelter. Please also feel free to give directly!!! For everyone’s safety: This event will require respirators or high filtration masks (KN94 or better) for anyone able to wear one. A limited supply of free masks will be provided, thanks to @maskblocseattle The studio has a HEPA air purifier. Swipe for event and accessibility information. This event is free, public, and all-ages. *Optional* RSVP and d0ugh-nations at tinyurl.com/IngatKa45 (not case sensitive) – listed at the top of my profile. (The RSVP list will be deleted after the event. Optional RSVPs are only collected to see how many people to expect.) ingat ka: a f*n-d*R@i -s-*r for disabled bipoc when: Sunday, April 5 at 12-4pm where: @asdf____studio who and what: featuring… - zines, raffle, and more by @allisonmasangkay - sounds by @206baesil with @ronnsphotobooth + limited supply of cookies by @butterbanditbakery image includes free CC clipart from @cleanairoly P.S. If this post taught you something new, please consider compensating my time and care in putting it together: - v-mo: Allison-Masangkay - c-app: $AMasangkay Image descriptions in the comments and alt text. #Filipinotown #FilipinotownSeattle #SeattleEvents #SeattleArtists

To everyone who came out to the grand opening of @asdf____studio , and the new home of @ronnsphotobooth , a few sundays ago – seeing y’all fill the sidewalk as I cut the ribbon, watching the lions dance and bless the space, hearing the drums echo between the brick buildings of the CID – had filled my heart. I was so emotionally overwhelmed that the only words I could manage were “thank you,” stretched between long pauses, taking in the moment. In those pauses, I looked up and noticed blue skies with scattered clouds, even though rain had been forecasted that afternoon. It felt like my Papang Narciso and Mamang Florencia Cunanan – my late maternal grandparents – along with their eldest daughter, my late Auntie Josie, were parting the clouds and bringing out the sun for this special occasion. Back in the Philippines in the ’60s and ’70s, Mamang and Papang owned a restaurant and a photography studio – Josephine’s Studio – in the town market, the heart of San Nicolas, Pangasinan. All eight of their daughters worked alongside them. The businesses raised them and put them through school. It wasn’t just a livelihood; it was a communal hub where their kindness and generosity were shared with everyone who walked through the doors, treating them like family. Their businesses thrived until they migrated to the US in the late ’70s to join their daughter, my Auntie Amalia. In the ’80s, inspired by her parents, Auntie Amalia opened a Filipino video store and restaurant in South Seattle. In the early ’90s, she went back to the Philippines and encouraged Auntie Josie – whom the studio is named after – to restart the photography business back home. Once again, our family captured weddings, birthdays, and life’s most special moments… until they, too, eventually made their way to Seattle. Thirty years later, things have come full circle. Here we are in the heart of the Chinatown–International District and Filipinotown – on same streets walked on by Carlos Bulosan, "the manongs," Uncle Bob Santos, and so many other remarkable Filipinos, past and present.
