This piece sat in a pile in the studio for a long time. Something I thought was a start but I couldn’t bring myself to change so it just hung around. It marked a shift in my work I wouldn’t recognize for a while - a tolerance for feeling unfinished, an new relationship to gesture, and a cultivation of a new image bank made entirely from studio experiments (paint scrapes, monoprints and squeegee drags turned screens/stencils). Today I think about it as a sketch, a quick idea that made me keep thinking about what’s next. On view now @karlartsf in The Field Was Never Empty.

The last painting of 2025 was delivered to its new home yesterday and honestly it feels like a Christmas miracle. Lots of people to thank: @michaelrussell11 and @robinsfreeman for collecting my work @mcwoodfabrication for the gorgeous frame @angrybaker for the last minute pictures @headleya1 for building the most beautiful crate to get this work from NY to CA

As guru Albers once said,  “in order to use color effectively, it is necessary to recognize that color deceives continually.” While at The Goldey House, I had the pleasure of playing with artists Cindy, Anne and Kate in approaching subtractive color by way of painting, screenprint, sun print, and funori seaweed print (combined with blackberry, matcha and turmeric). Using watercolor to make paint chip palette, I invited the three to arrange and create their own palettes while looking through red, green, and blue light gels.  We then created mini paintings in which the colors and composition respond to light gels - revealing and obscuring parts based on the gels we viewed it through. @kate.abercrombie  @aschaef60 @thegoldeyhouse #cindystocktonmoore

During Chroma in Natura at the Goldey House @thegoldeyhouse . Our experiments included some minor foraging and exploration of dye-based vs. pigmented color with CIndy Stockton Moore. Materials from the beautiful garden and natural environment around Goldey House served as both source and inspiration for motifs and cyanotypes. 1. pH modification with pantry spices (turmeric watercolor) food-scraps from dinner (red cabbage ink) and foraged bits from our walks (alder cone wash) led to a site-based palette - and led to a fruitful discussion of the living color of natural dyes. 2. On-site herbarium finds of goldenrod and marigold, natural powders for funori colarants (blackberry, turmeric and matcha powder), cloves for preservation and turmeric sample used in tests for lightfastness. 3. A collection of our group’s experimental cyanotypes - using transparency prints (digital and silkscreen), found natural elements, stencils and painted obstructions. 4. Funori resist that was tinted with matcha used on a screen with existing photo emulsion stencil. Top image shows the first pull and bottom image shows a later pull where the funori had broken down and is printing. You can see the subtle way the matcha is tinting the print as it fills in.

The retreat Chroma in Natura at Goldey House centered on the cross-pollination of color concepts used by all the artists involved as well as focused on developing new approaches and techniques born out of skill sharing sessions facilitated by each artist. I’ve been wanting to experiment with funori seaweed resist for a long time and this week at Goldey House was the perfect opportunity! To work with three great collaborators, Kate Abercrombie @kate.abercrombie , Maria Dumlao @madumlao and Cindy Stockton-Moore was ideal for experimenting with the potential for both a temporary resist and print paste. Plus we made a tiny zine to share with @thegoldeyhouse and Ticonderoga Arts! This week has been a series of material discoveries that will open up new lanes in my practice.
