Monica was a leading transgender advocate from Houston. She was the founding editor of TransGriot, a blog focusing on issues pertaining to trans women, particularly BIPOC women. Roberts’ coverage of transgender homicide victims in the United States is credited for bringing national attention to the issue.
In honor of #TransWeekofAwareness and #TDOR, we are taking a moment to honor two powerhouse activists – Monica Roberts and Lauryn Farris – who appear in the film and strongly supported @frankiegwolfe ’s journey in #ARunForMore. Our team was heartbroken to learn of their passing while editing the film.
The night of Frankie’s election actually landed on Monica’s birthday in 2019. Monica wanted to support Frankie and traveled all the way from Houston to San Antonio to “witness history.”
A big thank you to all trans and queer elders who have fought for trans equality and continue to inspire transgender individuals to live as their true selves. You have built the foundation upon which we stand today.

I had the most amazing time at the Salt Lake City Queer film Festival @damntheseheels .
A big highlight was getting to meet @frankiegwolfe who was there with her documentary @arunformore which put a spotlight on her as the first transgender woman to run for city council in District 8 in San Antonio, Texas. You MUST stream it on Amazon Prime. It's so inspiring and beautiful. Please follow Frankie and let's continue to support her on her journey. She's a powerhouse and I just fell head over heels for her and her husband, Jeff. 🩷🤍🩵

Growing up, Frankie Gonzales-Wolfe never imagined she’d make history. Unfolding amidst an onslaught of anti-trans legal attacks, A Run for More immerses viewers in Frankie’s journey as she finds her voice, questions her relationship to community, and tries to become the first openly transgender elected official in Texas.
A Run for More is about more than one race – it's about working towards a world where people who are shut out of our democracy can reclaim their voices, build collective power, and create the conditions to thrive.
