I have been slowly developing a link between the 2 crafts I do. Silversmithing and maille making. It is steadily gaining speed, and none more so than this week when the latest Red List of Endangered Crafts was published. The techniques (allied trades) I use in not only silversmithing but which are also fundamental to maille making are now classed as endangered. Wire drawing and polishing 2 that I regularly use, are underrated and frankly misunderstood, alongside others including spinning and they are all in danger. We MUST act now and come together as a craft community, this is happening in all crafts. Egos have to be left at the door, the crafts MUST come first.
This is our heritage, we cannot lose it. Please go and have a look at the Red List by @heritagecrafts and see how you can help. Supporting makers is a start, as is learning about our crafts but it also must come from within the community. I love my crafts and will do what I can for their future.
“The silver allied trades - which incorporates precious metalworking skills such as lost wax casting, wire drawing, buffing, and polishing - have today been collectively classified as critically endangered skills for the first time. These precious handmaking skills, dating back to the bronze age, have almost vanished from our school curriculums and higher education programmes in the last decade.
“The craft and art of silversmithing and its allied trades is hidden in plain sight, from the F1 trophies hoisted at races throughout the season, to the teaspoons in our kitchen drawers, the silver jewellery we wear, and the striking sculptures that grace Britain’s train stations and public squares. The hand skills required to create each of these pieces quietly permeate our daily lives - we just don’t realise it.”

This post really is for the folk who feel the need to force their ‘helpful’ comment “no one uses chainmail today, so what is the point of it” on me. As many of you wonderful craftsfolk will have been there and done it and got the t-shirt, we grin and bear it and try to explain why we do what we do (I can explain it to you but I can’t understand it for you).
So when our friend and local butcher came to me needing his mail apron mending I told him about these comments. Some time ago he dreamt he stabbed himself in the stomach whilst working and guess what he went out and bought the next day….you’ve guessed it, something that has no use these days 😉 it was my pleasure to be able to use my craft and save his apron (and his stomach!)
That’s my quiet little rant over, thanks for reading 🥳

How much do I want to dress in green, sit atop this branch and await weary travellers to pass by, or is that just me?! The line between other realms and my reality may have just crossed 😂
