*NEWS* from @chartwellnt today for Sir Winston Churchill’s 151st birthday! Our first image to introduce this post is a painting by Churchill himself, showing the landscape & the house that were so close to his heart. We’ve been working with @artfletch to create 3D models of two places, one indoors & one outside. The first model is of the Lower Lake, where regular visitors will know we’ve had to restrict access in recent months. This is because of ongoing surveys to the structure & soils surrounding one of Chartwell's significant built structures; the concrete dam at the southern-most end of the Lower Lake. The Lakes were greatly modified during the 1930s, with Churchill being actively involved in the works. David has also produced a stunning model of Churchill’s Study, which is located on the first floor of the mansion with views out over the Lakes. For the first time, you can now explore this space & some of the most important collection items, from the comfort of your own armchair - links in bio. Recent work by the Garden team has also demonstrated more of the Churchills’ connections with Chartwell – in the form of some very distinctive finds. Following works in one of the borders adjoining the House, a disused drain was discovered near the former pantry. In this, the team found an assemblage of material, including an animal bone, glass fragments & most exciting of all, three tiny metal disks (just 1.5cm in diameter), labelled ‘Pol Roger & Co’. Pol Roger champagne was one of Sir Winston's favourite drinks & he is known to have regularly ordered cases from the early 1900s onwards. These metal disks were from the necks of the bottles, as part of the opening mechanism. Image 1: Painting C286 "A View of Chartwell", by Winston S. Churchill, c.1938, © Churchill Heritage Ltd. New #photogrammetry capture of Holy Trinity Church, Buckfast. If you love gothic horror look into the backstory of this church. Ghost dogs, evil lords, the occult, multiple times "it went on fire", a cave system underneath and an inspiration for The Hound of the Baskervilles! 3D: https://skfb.ly/pzOCH
