🇺🇸 It is an honor and a joy that one of my works has once again been selected for the New York City-based Vox Novus “Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame” contemporary music project.
The title of my short aphoristic piece is *Snowflake Jig*. Its program is based on Emily Dickinson’s poem of the same title (see below). The work was written for baritone violin* and clavichord and it will be premiered online by Alisa Rose and Monica Chew, streamed live from Oakland, California, together with 14 other contemporary compositions, tomorrow at 5:00 PM EDT (11:00 PM CEST).

Master instrumentalists Tristan Scroggins and Alisa Rose provide a touchstone for experiencing the world in the moment. Scroggins, a mandolinist and second generation bluegrass virtuoso, and Rose, a Grammy-nominated violinist, create an inviting musical atmosphere with their thoughtful, conversational arrangements and startling dynamic and emotional range. The listener is taken on a journey away from the familiar as the duo embark on adventurous improvisations that traverse the convergence of bluegrass and classical genres. The playful spontaneity of their improvising energizes performers and listeners alike, connecting them to each passing moment. Scroggins & Rose use their technical expertise and expansive knowledge of traditional music to put on world-class performances of highly nuanced and melodic tunes. With two separate lifetimes of dedication to craft, authenticity, and their individual instruments, Scroggins & Rose forge their own path which breathes new life into old traditions.
Speranza is the third collection from Scroggins & Rose, and their first on Adhyâropa. Conceived during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, this album came out of the darkness of that time; but rather than gloom, hopefulness and light permeate every corner of the recording. Scroggins and Rose are masters of their instruments, and the interplay between the two showcases not merely their virtuosity but their deep musical sensitivity for one another.
In this Improvising for Fiddlers and Violinists lesson, @arosefiddle offers tips on how to improvise with scales and arpeggios! Alisa talks about practicing patterns on scales and then shows you how to incorporate the patterns into “Blackberry Blossom” and “Goodbye Liza Jane.” Join us!
