She shares with us her upbringing and history with her hometown in Bagerhat, Bangladesh. "What excites me most is the possibility of bringing these images back to the community they come from. I want the women of Bagerhat to see their own stories reflected with dignity — in exhibitions, in a book, in spaces where their struggles and resilience are honored. For me, the most powerful moment will be when the work returns home." Read more at https://www.worldsthroughminds.life/words/farhana-satu #WTMTalks

#YLNArtistTakeover In Wait For Me, @aronnika gently documents the everyday solitude of her 90-year-old grandmother—capturing love, distance, and the slow passing of time through a granddaughter’s lens. Wait For Me is a deeply personal photo series by Bangladeshi photographer Farhana Satu, centered on her elderly grandmother who lives alone in their rural hometown while the rest of the family is based in Dhaka. Through this project, Satu returned home to spend time with her and began photographing her daily life—an act that brought them both joy. The series is a quiet reflection on generational shifts, cultural change, and the emotional space between city and village, fast-paced life and stillness. Farhana Satu is a Dhaka-based photojournalist and documentary photographer. Her work focuses on overlooked stories and intimate human connection. She is the recipient of the Magnum Foundation’s Heat Fellowship and has exhibited at NGV Triennial 2024 in Australia. Her photos have appeared in The Guardian, British Journal of Photography, and Prothom Alo. Curated by @zayfairuz

“I come from the southwestern region of Bangladesh, a low-lying coastal area where the largest mangrove forest of the world, Sundarban, exists. Climate experts predict that by 2050, rising sea levels will submerge 17 percent of Bangladesh’s land, and 25 percent of the land of Bagerhat district will be submerged. Which is my village home. Here, salinity is having a huge impact on people’s health, especially women. 1 in 100 women have had their uterus surgically removed due to chronic bleeding, infection, or tumors. A few months ago I was diagnosed with a uterus tumor too. Being in such physical and mental condition, I feel so connected with the women of my hometown. As an artist it is my duty to talk about how people of my home town are persistently combating this crisis and fighting to exist. Through black and white photographs, I bring attention to my hometown as it faces being submerged. I also use cyanotype and salt prints with excess amounts of salt so that the images lose their detail, representing how the women of my hometown are losing their lives. Earlier this year, half of these prints were lost to a cyclone, and the remaining were damaged by the floods. The few I managed to save are presented here.” – Farhana Satu (@aronnika ), from the project “Water/Life” *** This week we're spotlighting projects from our 2023-24 Heat Fellowship supporting work on climate-based migration, pollution-driven health disparities, and collective memory and resilience in the face of ecological disaster. As increasingly urgent climate crises demand new paradigms for making and sharing images, this fellowship emphasized experimental approaches that reimagine what a critical and ecological photographic practice might look like. 💫 Link in bio to see more from the projects

“Someone promised me a job and brought me here, at this brothel, I was only 12 years old that time. He sold me here and left. I accepted my fate long ago, after tolerating tremendous amount of physical and psychological torture. I have more scars on my body than memory in heart. The only thing I care about is my cats now.” Said Lota, a sex worker at Mymensingh gangipar brothel. #bangladesh
