Chainsaw meets autonomous robotics 🧊🤖
At 2,800m above Zermatt, student team @polaris.ethz (by @aris.space ) turned a frozen lake into a real-world test site. 80 cm of ice had to go before their compact AUV could dive below the surface, measuring ice thickness safely, without drilling or risk.
But this goes beyond alpine lakes. The same technology is paving the way for future missions to the icy oceans of moons like Enceladus and Europa, where navigation without GPS, communication through ice, and full autonomy aren’t optional, they’re essential.
Schwarzsee becomes a space analogue.
And ten @ethzurich students turn ambition into action.

What a blast! After our initial tests in the Zürich Lake, we finally made it to the frozen lake in St. Moritz.
There, we tested several under-ice navigation systems and conducted first real ice-thickness measurements. We are excited to share a major technical milestone in our RDRE (Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine) development within Project PEGASUS!

Because our RDRE operates on propane, upgrading our Engine Test Bench (ETB) was a critical step toward safe and reliable testing. Working with propellants that are gaseous at ambient conditions comes with unique challenges, especially when it comes to handling explosive atmospheres.

What’s new? - Pumping and storage: Our system is now capable of pumping and storing both liquid and gaseous propane in pressurized tanks, where it can be safely maintained in liquid form. - Explosive atmosphere management: We implemented active air circulation around the plumbing to effectively dilute leaked gases. - Controlled disposal: The system now includes a reliable and fail-safe way to clear the lines after each test run.

With these adaptations successfully implemented and validated, our test bench is now ready for the next phase of RDRE testing.

We had the great opportunity to welcome reporters from South Korea at the ETH Hangar last week. It was a privilege to present Project POLARIS alongside other ARIS initiatives such as PEGASUS and ASTERIA to an international audience. We were excited to show a short demo and take part in engaging conversations about underwater robotics and space technology in Switzerland. We shared our vision and answered technical questions about our product.

After months of design, manufacturing, and integration, we have developed the first iteration of our rotating detonation engine. We built two engine versions: one actively water-cooled and one uncooled, both featuring interchangeable cores. With detonation waves occurring up to 20,000 times per second, we expect to generate around 1 kN of thrust.

Thanks to our sponsor FERAMIC, our actively cooled engine was 3D-printed in copper-nickel-silicon. We also thank LEUKA for post-processing our injector, Schmelzmetall for supplying the copper powder, Looser for providing the copper blanks, PDZ for the conventional machining, and @emde_blechfabrik_ag for manufacturing the engine test stand.

We captured pre-detonator high-speed footage!

In preparation for our first firing next week, we tested our new high-speed camera from Phantom / AMETEK. Our pre-detonator burned H₂ with GOX at speeds exceeding 2,200 m/s, confirming a reliable initiation process for our engine. Capturing this footage was only possible thanks to the Phantom TMX 7510, which can record at up to 1.75 million frames per second!
