Researchers from the Department of Physics (D-PHYS), ETH Zurich and colleagues from the Technische Universität München have experimentally demonstrated a monolithic mode-locked semiconductor laser with a continuously and widely tunable repetition rate. This laser system could become highly relevant for applications in areas such as spectroscopy, sensing and communications. 👉 Read the full story on the d-phys website (link in bio) 👈

ETH Zurich researchers achieved stable quantum gates using neutral-atom qubits, leveraging geometric phases to ensure resistance to experimental noise. ——— Quantum exchange or swap gates are an important part of quantum computers with a large number of qubits. ——— Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a swap gate for qubits made of neutral atoms that is based on a particular physical effect: the state of the particles switches depending on the path they take and is independent of external disturbances. ——— These so-called geometric phases make the system much less susceptible to experimental noise or imperfections. ——— Read the full article on ethz.ch

Researchers at ETH Zurich and the University of Basel switch a ferromagnet’s polarity with laser light, paving the way for light-controlled circuits. ——— • Researchers at ETH Zurich and the University of Basel have inverted the direction of the magnetic field of a ferromagnet – comparable to a compass needle – using a short laser pulse.  ——— • The ferromagnet consisted of a special material made of twisted atomic layers and was based on topology, a particularly robust state of matter that is very resistant to change.  ——— • In the future, laser pulses could be used in this way to create arbitrary and adaptable electronic circuits.  ——— Read the full article on ethz.ch
