:: I MOVED TO LOS ANGELES. (for now). 🤭 my grandma always says “embrace that you are in the process of becoming”. a few months ago, she told me “baby it’s time for you to make some moves”. 3 years ago i woke up and realized i didn’t actually love my life. i hated my job. i despised the system i was working in. i was in and out of the hospital. i was on 14 pills a day and insulin to treat my chronic illness (diabetes). i felt lost. it was the “in no way was this supposed to be my life”. on paper i had everything: i was rich. i was successful. in forbes and vogue by 25. 91 awards. once in a lifetime moments. the celebrity activist friend to oligarchs and royal families. political advisor to some of the most powerful in the world. tick off all the boxes. and i cracked: i had a nervous breakdown after burying 12 trans folks that year including my former assistant. my best friend relapsed. our fiscal sponsor closed their doors and i had 2 weeks to create an independent nonprofit and raise half a million dollars to keep all the staff employed. DID IT and i quit. hired a new board and new leaders. i moved. the end. everyone always asks why houston? and honestly, i still don’t know. i needed to runaway from all the questions. from the system i was in- to a city where i was unknown. i needed freedom. i needed respite. i needed to find my own voice. i felt lost in all the narratives- i’d been a public figure since i was 19 and now i had to actually define myself. houston gave me clarity. thank god for that. i needed all of it. i’ve decided to close my consulting firm- after raising $5 million in a recession for my nonprofit clients- supporting campaigns, advising on strategy and advising high net worth donors on how to support grassroots. i love my work and stand by it to this day- i mentored and platformed so many and helped open doors for us to lead. i came in with an army of women- and that has always been the through line. always. so i’m now in LA- and have my studio back home in san francisco. doing a residency in paris soon- and some work in japan i signed an NDA for. more soon i promise. live your life for you. i finally feel free 🫶🏾
