Ces deux corps de texte et styles italiques soulignent des formes cursives fluides tirées d’écritures manuscrites, avec l’italique offrant une approche nouvelle et accessible d'une variante secondaire bengali pour assurer une continuité textuelle. L’expressivité retrouvée dans le style Poster, destiné aux grands titres, traduit de multiples formes abstraites développées à partir d’expérimentations analogues de papier découpé pour une impression plus spontanée. GUS Merits 2025 – Manik /// Today we highlight Manik, by Arnab Chakraborty (@architect_of_type ), one of the four Gerard Unger Scholarship merits for 2025. You can see all of the winners on our website (link in bio). A type design student at EsadType (2023–25), Arnab specialises in multiscript typography with a focus on Latin, Bengali, and Devanagari. With a background in architecture, his research-oriented approach helps him explore the interplay between structurally diverse scripts in his works. He is passionate about developing culturally sensitive typefaces and is currently expanding his skills in font production and technology. Arnab sees type design as a way to merge detail, function, and tradition — the very qualities he sought in his architectural works. Merit winners receive individualised consultation from TypeTogether founders Veronika Burian and José Scaglione, as well as a copy of our “Building Ligatures” book. Congratulations, Arnab!

Manik by Arnab Chakraborty Manik is a Bengali-Latin multiscript type family shaped by diversity and vernacular letterforms. Designed for expressive, versatile editorial use, it pairs a dynamic Bengali style with a matching contemporary Latin. Both text and italic styles feature fluid, cursive handwritting-inspired forms, with the italic offering a fresh, legible approach to a Bengali secondary style for continuous text. The expressive Poster style, intended for large titles, uses abstract, counterless forms developed through analogue paper-cutting experiments for a spontaneous feel. The name Manik is a tribute to the legendary Bengali filmmaker and graphic designer Satyajit Ray, affectionately known as Manik-da by those close to him.

'Karigori' - This one is from one of the typecookers I drew few months back at the start of @esadtype_amiens . Although the parameters were clearly for latin, but why miss any opportunity to draw some cursive Bengali. . . .
