Real-time reef monitoring just leveled up. 🪸 Sea-Bird Scientific, Sofar Ocean, MEGA Lab, UH Hilo, and Aqualink have successfully integrated a Sea-Bird Scientific sensor with a Sofar Spotter Buoy + Smart Mooring using the Bristlemouth Development Kit. This is a significant step forward for plug-and-play integration of marine sensors. Off Keahole Point, Kona, Hawaiʻi, live pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, salinity, pressure, wind, wave, and temperature data are now combined with a live underwater video feed in one public dashboard: aqualink.org/sites/1006. See every stressor the reef is facing and watch it respond in real time. “These data are paired with real-time visual observations from the MEGA Lab livestream camera to document how physical and chemical conditions vary with tides, storms, seasonal cycles, and heat stress events... The measurements also provide an open resource for students, community partners, and researchers to link observed reef behavior with shifts in local ocean chemistry.” — Dr. John Burns, MEGA Lab at University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo The data, code, and decoders are open-source and free to use. 🔗 Link to the live dashboard in Aqualink’s bio and story.

Taking coral monitoring to the next level. 🪸 This is the new survey timeline from the Coral City Camera, capturing and comparing images to track the reef’s direct response to this summer’s elevated temperatures in Miami. Swipe to see the public Aqualink dashboard where this monitoring happens! In addition to the livestream, you can explore all the data behind the visuals, from ocean temperature to Heat Stress Analysis and Coral Bleaching Alert Levels. Dive into the data! With the peak heat season ending in the Northern Hemisphere, many coral reefs are now at their breaking point. This is when the risk of severe bleaching from sustained heat stress is greatest. 🌡️ Our interactive map on Aqualink allows you to track this threat in real-time. The colored overlay represents accumulated heat stress (DHW), a key metric for predicting bleaching, and each dot is a monitoring site colored by its current bleaching alert level. (Image 1) Swipe to see what this stress looks like on the ground! We’re diving into the dashboard for Pollokshields Wreck in Bermuda. (Image 2) Here, the dashboard combines satellite data with in-situ sensors, like a Smart Mooring buoy, giving a holistic view of the conditions the corals are actually experiencing. (Image 4) The data tells a story, and the final image shows the real-world impact. This powerful survey timeline from the Bermuda site documents the progression of coral bleaching from July to September of this year. A direct result of the sustained heat stress. The “Environmental Drivers of Coral Restoration Success” project brought together multi-disciplinary research to unlock key insights into coral reef survival. By combining high-resolution hydrodynamic modeling with real-time data from Aqualink buoys, researchers were able to identify the optimal restoration sites at Bundegi Reef, part of Ningaloo Reef. This collaboration between UWA, AIMS, and the Minderoo Foundation not only advanced our understanding of reef dynamics but also laid the groundwork for future restoration efforts. The findings from this project will shape more resilient restoration strategies, which are crucial in the face of climate change.
