📣 TODAY ~ APT WEBINAR: APT Technical Committee on Codes and Standards Presents Better Integrating Historic Buildings into Building Performance Standards 🗓️ Thursday, May 14 🕑 2-3:30 p.m. ET Building Performance Standards (BPS) have emerged as a potent new policy to improve the energy/emissions performance of buildings. However, as a policy that impacts existing buildings, they raise important questions for historic buildings. The presentation will present a new policy toolkit that addresses how to effectively integrate historic buildings and historic preservation into BPS. Funded by the Fitch Foundation, the toolkit includes a survey of existing policies, an exploration of the preservation issues and a collection of model language that can be adapted to existing and new BPS. The policy toolkit has the potential to influence the shape of this new sustainability policy in a way that protects and even benefits historic preservation goals at a key moment in the broader adoption of BPS in the policy landscape. APT DC is currently accepting presentation abstracts for the 2026 Fall Symposium, which will take place at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum in Alexandria, Virginia, on Friday, September 11, 2026. This year's theme is Adaptive Reuse: Policy in Practice. Since its creation in 1976, the Federal Historic Tax Credit has shaped the nation’s built environment and changed how Americans view historic landmarks and neighborhoods. The federal historic tax credit, along with a number of state tax credits, has incentivized the reuse of historic buildings across the country. Former warehouses, textile mills, railroad stations, firehouses, hospitals, banks, office buildings, and even gas stations have been saved from demolition and converted to new uses that continue to serve their communities. Thus, rehabilitation/adaptive reuse has become one of the most popular and visible aspects of historic preservation in the United States. 50 years later, the 2026 APT DC Symposium seeks to explore various aspects of the rehabilitation treatment’s theory and practice – through both its development and utilization over the past 50 years, but also its future application. 🔗 Details at aptdc.org/symposium #aptdcchapter

The Parlor at Squire Bosworth’s “Castle” is an exceptional display of vernacular flair in the “Quiet Corner” of Eastern Connecticut. Michiel and I are thrilled to show off this fantastic room to the folks who will be coming to Guildhalls inaugural training at the end of the Month. There are still spots remaining for the 3 Day Hands on training and 2 Day Informational session. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in architecture, preservation, sustainability, and history to name a few! #historichomes #georgianhouse #18thcentury #connecticut #historicpreservation 📷: @arikellerman

A big thank you to our incredible APT Board of Directors! 🙌 Our board members (and committee chairs) are volunteers — preservation professionals who generously give their time to support APT's mission, and we are so grateful for every one of them. This weekend, the board came together for their annual Spring meeting — reconnecting with colleagues, diving into important organizational business, and even picking up some new experiences along the way. 🔥 On day two, the group headed to @slossmetalarts / Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, where they watched a live iron pour, made their own cast iron tiles, and took a guided tour covering Sloss's history, preservation efforts, and future plans. It's not every day you get to combine board work with molten iron! Thank you, board, for all that you do. ❤️ Photo of the APT Board, from left to right: Andreea Hamilton, Rachel Palisin, Erin Fisher, Namrata Dadawala, Robert Score, Lena Buchinger, Julia Manglitz, Lyles McBratney, Corey Spitzer, Jenna Bresler, Melbourne Garber, Kate Allen, Robert Hotes, Daniele Paulino, and Brian Rich (committee co-chair).
