🌳 NEW RELEASE! 🌳 Canopy is unapologetically a one-weight display typeface with a severe amount of flair and ornamentation. Originally designed for the exhibition ‘Hieroglyphs – Symbolist Drawings 1890-1910’ at the National Gallery of Denmark in 2018, it embodies the Symbolists’ fascination with dreams, mysticism and the natural world.
Its shapes are “pregnant with meaning”, as the Symbolists would’ve put it. Rounded counters flow seamlessly into flared serifs, contrasted by flat tops and bottoms adding a slight bit of rigour and control to an otherwise organic expression. These shapes draw loose inspiration from the lettering on the cover of ‘Praktisk Tegnekursus’ (1900), a technical manual for painting and drawing favoured by many artists of the time.

New custom type by @formal.settings × @approx.type 🤝 We were asked to create two typefaces for @sorelfootwear — a company founded in 1962 known, amongst other things, for their Caribou boot 🥾
The serif (Sorel Frontier) is designed for headlines, distilling Sorel’s character by balancing the raw power of the natural world with the refined, elegant sensibility discovered in their footwear.
The sans (Sorel Base) on the other hand, serves a more functional purpose being used merely in small copy, optimised for legibility, while still incorporating a few quirks that mirror the serif’s playfulness.
@checklandkindleysides expertly developed the broader brand strategy and identity. Thanks a lot @stevenubsdell for bringing us on board for this fun project! ❄️

Realm v 0.8 is out as per today on @futurefonts ! 🍾 It now has full Latin S coverage, as defined by Christoph Koeberlin. This means support for a total of 389 languages and (3 billion people) 👀
For the real serious typographers, 0.8 also includes case-sensitive dashes, brackets, braces, parentheses and diacritics.
Lastly, 0.8 introduces a very special .notdef symbol that I definitely did not spend way too much time vectorising 🦁

I did a poster for Night Prayer 🌒 An exhibition presented by @_littlevirgil at @inter.pblc showcasing texts from four poets expanded into print, sound, image, and installation.
The poster is typeset in Artefact (working title). An unfinished serif face I’ve been developing on/off for a couple of years. It’s taking cues from various sources, namely Plantin’s roman and Garamond’s italic, trying to find an “eco-system” where these can coexist 🤝

‘For Uden Foråret’ is a book authored by the 2025 Spring Journalism-class at @krogeruphojskole . The texts explore life and society within the school’s walls and beyond, tied together by the theme “hope” 🌱
For the past five years or so, I’ve had the pleasure of helping each class shape their school magazine over two intensive days of design and editorial work. This year, we decided on a book format to give the content a more thoughtful and enduring tone.
All the texts were typeset in just one day—and I made the ill-advised decision of using an unfinished text typeface of mine for the whole thing, causing a lot of back and forth between typesetting the book and creating missing characters in Glyphs App 💆♂️
Despite the frantically short turnaround and inevitable pre-press anxiety, I’m very pleased with the result and the great effort by the students.
The book is not for sale.

In the pipeline (since forever) 🛠️ Canopy Typeface. Originally created for an exhibition on Danish Symbolist paintings at SMK, Canopy is a bold and expressive display one-weighter that reflects the Symbolists’ fascination with mysticism, dreams, visions, and the natural world. In addition, its forms are loosely inspired by ‘Praktisk Tegnekursus’ (1900), a technical drawing manual by Oscar Matthiesen and a reference that many artists of the era swore by.
