👩🏽‍🦽‍➡️Marginalised and vulnerable communities are hit the hardest in times of crises — fragile or absent connectivity in rural communities, informal settlements, Indigenous territories, and conflict-affected regions often leads to being cut off from: 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Family ⛑️ Emergency responders ☎️ Community organising 🩺 Life-saving information and services. 🛜 These are not simply technological failures but consequences of political and economic choices, and feminist organising reminds us that other futures are possible — where connectivity is not just a privilege reserved for a few, but a shared resource that supports communities on the frontlines of harm and exclusion. ➡️ Comment “emergency” to get the article in your inbox/access it at the link in bio. 📝 From “Connectivity is political: Feminist futures in a world of climate collapse and digital divides” by @hijakamran 📑 [GenderIT edition] Returning to roots: Feminist technology movements organising for and responding to emerging realities

If you do end up doomscrolling this weekend, you know what to look out for 😉 Our very own @sheenagimase marks some red flags for us: ➡️ Is it divisive? ➡️ Is it unbalanced? ➡️ Does it have a sensational and urgent framing? ➡️ Does it make you emotional? What’s one tell-tale sign you look out for? ⬇️ #TheFullPicture #OurVoicesOurFutures

In a moment where AI is constantly offering answers, this piece argues for the power of sitting with questions. Drawing from the “Don’t Ask AI, Ask a Peer” series - a partnership with @genderitorg , @apc_network and @globalvoicesonline , it brings together perspectives shaped by lived realities, contradictions, and dissent. From surveillance to land dispossession, the harms are not unknown, and neither are the struggles against them. Instead of neat conclusions, @de.p leans into discomfort, disagreement, and unfinished thinking in this article, reminding us that questioning dominant narratives is part of the work. AI surveillance is often framed as a distant problem, but this piece shows how close it already is. From smart devices to facial recognition systems, technologies designed for convenience end up becoming tools of control. Looking at China as a case study, @oiwan.lam explores how AI regulation can exist alongside widespread surveillance, where corporate accountability is emphasised but state power remains unchecked. The result is a system where rights are limited, and scrutiny is rare. What would it take to shift that balance back towards people? AI is being rolled out across India at speed, from facial recognition in public spaces to automated systems in welfare and policing. But where are the safeguards? In this piece, @rezwanbd traces how “responsible AI” is often framed as a goal, while in practice, systems are deployed without transparency, accountability or meaningful consent. The consequences are real and immediate, shaping who gets access to services, who is surveilled, and who is left out altogether. If human rights are not built into AI from the start, they are rarely protected later. What would it mean for AI to actually serve people, not power? In this piece, @rebeccaryak brings the conversation back to human rights, grounded in centuries of struggle and shaped by ongoing demands for dignity and justice. From the right to life and equality, to privacy, free expression and access to essential resources, it asks whether these systems are protecting our rights, or putting them at risk? Because technology, including AI, reflects the society we live in. Read the full piece on GenderIT.org. Original illustration by @sabeenyameen for this series. #AskAPeer #FeministInternet

AI is offered to us as if it's inevitable, as if the way it's built is just the natural order of things. But these systems carry the values, priorities, and biases of the people who funded and built them, and right now, those people are mostly accountable to shareholders, not to the users. @hijakamran questions whether an ethical, feminist AI is even possible. Who builds AI, who controls it, who benefits, and who gets left behind to deal with the consequences - on environment, labour, resources, rights, and on health - these are the questions worth asking before accepting any of this as progress and innovation. Original illustration by @sabeenyameen for this series. This article is part of the ongoing series, "Don't Ask AI, Ask A Peer". Read the full piece on GenderIT.org

AI keeps being sold to us as intelligent and creative. But what if that story is the problem? Daria Dergacheva challenges the hype to emphasise that AI doesn’t think, feel, or create. It generates patterns from human work, shaped by corporate narratives that blur the line between machine output and human intelligence. At a time when everyone is rushing to centre AI, this article insists that there is no creativity or connection without humans. Original illustration created by @ibrahimkizza_art for this series. "For too long, the conversations that shape telecommunications policy and infrastructure investment have happened without community networks in the room. Policy that is made without their representatives present will continue to serve everyone but them." - Yumna Panday, Zenzeleni Community Networks Capacity building proposals like the South Africa School of Digital Policy (ZASDIP 2026/CN) are helping turn lived experience into policy influence – equipping communities with the tools to advocate, engage and lead.
